Format SSD to clean install windows, good or bad?

So I'm getting a crucial m4 256gb coming in this week...I can't wait and I'm so stoked!

I am just wondering, is it bad to format an SSD? Or will it take like a million formats before there is any kind of degradation to the SSD? I do plan to keep my M4 for quite some time (3-4 years)...and I know I'll be going through quite a few windows installs....I just don't wanna break anything

Standard formatting is ok, just don't do anything special like filling the drive with 0's.

How do I know it's standard formatting?

when I need to clean install windows...I'll boot from my CD....then use "custom" install, versus upgrade...then I'll delete my partition with the win7 on it....then I select where I want win7 installed, then it starts installing

Secure erasing is much better for performance when you want to clean your drive for a reinstall. Boot to parted magic and SE the drive.

Is it okay to do this multiple times in the SSD's lifespan? Like I said, I do plan on keeping my crucial m4 for awhile....and I know I'll go through quite a few fresh installs

I could have sworn I read somewhere that formatting an SSD is bad....I'm not sure if they meant formatting once or a million times...obviously if it's a million times, I'll never worry about it and just format away biggrin.gif

it's not bad, not at all, where did you get that false info? you can reformat it every day all you want, it doesn't affect it.

i agree to an extent that it shouldn't be a problem doing it a few times that you probably would do a clean instal..

some would say you should format it with partition magic to as a good maintenance practice
