should i get a 60 or 120 hz monitor?

Thread Starter
I was wondering if getting a 60 Hz will cap my fps at 60 because this is what I read
I will be getting the gtx 670

Thinking about this monitor

Thanks

60Hz means the monitor can only refresh the image 60 times in a second, so yes it can only display 60 frames per second. Which is not a bad thing, you only really need 120Hz for 3D.

some people say the difference between 60hz and 120hz is like night and day, others say those people are complete imbeciles. i have yet to find a definitive answer, but seeing as how human eyes do not view things in terms of FPS, i imagine that everything will appear smoother. however, you have to have good hardware to make this worth it - something like a 670, 680, 7970, etc. otherwise you wont get much above 60 fps with high settings and the 120hz wont be really utilized. but, also, if you want 3d you need 120hz.

Pretty much what was said above, 60Hz for normal use, get 120Hz only if you're going to be using 3D.

I could tell the different between the BenQ 120hz vs a Asus 60hz monitor, especially playing like CS or any fast paced FPS. I prefer a large format display over the 120hz monitor though, that is my 2 cents. I loved my Crossover 27' but ended up upgrading to a Dell ultra sharp 2560x1600 and it is amazing, especially playing and RPG type game such as Fallout, Metro, Dead Space, Diablo, but you would definitely need to SLI if you bought a large format 60hz monitor.

I really only like the 120hz benq monitor for FPS games because I actually noticed smoother mouse movements and the faster refresh rates which helped with accuracy.

If you are serious FPS gamer, 120hz monitor is a must (with capable video card).
You'll notice how smooth when you jump in the mid air, turn a 360.
Not talking about got shot in the back, turn 180 and shoot back, you'll have advantage biggrin.gif

I just moved to a 120Hz and while i don't think they are as magical as some make out i would say its definitely worth getting one if you are getting a new monitor. I say this for 3 reasons.

1: the massive number of console ports that your 670 will be able to run over 60fps meaning that you either need to use vsync (and limit the performance of the system you paid for) or suffer with tearing.
2: nvidia 3D is really worth a go and a 120Hz screen will keep this option open. There are even deals that come with kit and monitor so look around for them.
3: yes, they are smoother than a 60hz screen. how much you notice this difference is up to the individual but it is noticeable.

Remember you will probably keep your monitor for longer than any other component so its worth spending the money and getting one that is as up to date tech as possible.

I agree tearing would be a issue.
