MSI motherboard software RAID?

For the first time ever I have 2 hard drives, 1 640GB and 1 500GB. Both 7200RPM, one is Hitachi (don't yell at me, it works fine) and one is WD. I obviously have the options of either leaving them be separate and maybe have one with just a few files on it as a system drive so it starts faster, and one as storage for music, games, pictures, movies, etc. or RAID 0 because they're not too fast at transferring large files OR RAID 1 even though I don't have any important things like work documents or taxes, just entertainment stuff.

I don't have a hardware RAID controller is the thing and I've heard integrated RAID controllers suck. Is this true or one of those things that's exaggerated to keep idiots from possibly losing important data?

MSI h55m-e23 if it matters. I'll fill out my system in about 13 seconds.

Oh and if you think a real RAID controller is the best option then show me a cheap one that works with 2 drives and is PCIe x1

The integrated RAID controller will work just fine for your needs.

However.

The thing that they talk about regarding them sucking is for when you have higher speeds that need to be managed, i.e. 5-6 drives or high performance hard drives.

Software RAID is possible, but it's much more annoying to deal with. Hardware RAID is much easier to deal with, and will give you less headaches in the future.

In the end, a RAID endeavour isn't worth it imo. RAID 1 halves the amount of space you have available, and RAID 0 is *risky*. Not so much, but depending on the importance of information...yeah.

If you absolutely want to run RAID for fun, go with a RAID card. (I'll let someone else post a suitable one)

Trolololol. Your motherboard doesn't have an integrated RAID controller. hardware or no RAID anyways tongue.gif

I found this out like an hour after I posted. It pissed me off because there's a setting called "RAID" in the BIOS that you can set to either IDE or ATHA or something like that. I still don't know what the reason behind it is. I guess I'll just keep them separate for storage.

Either way, I'm pretty sure you can't RAID 2 different sized drives.

While technically possible (though you would lose the excess capacity in the lager drive) it is not a good practice. For RAID you want to go with identical drives so you don't have any timing disparities between drives. This means that they need to be the same size and model drive for best performance. Some RAID controlers suppoert JOBD "RAID" and that will work no matter what size and variety of drives you choose to use (though you typically won't see any performance boost or parity used for data protectoin). A single decent SSD would be a much better investement than any hardware RAID controler IMHO...

+1

RAIDing separate drives works, but not the best idea. Anyways like I said before, it's a better investment to just get SSDs rather than tinker about with unstable RAID setups.

You could spend as little as $100 for a basic SSD that would easily outperform those two HDDs in RAID, but your point remains quite valid. I don't consider start-up times to be the most attractive feature of SSDs, but that seems to be a talking point.

I'll put it this way:
When an HDD fails you loose everything, as in you cannot read or write anymore. By contrast, when an SSD fails you will lose the ability to boot from it as well as usually loosing the ability to do any more writes, but your data is still there to be recovered. To me that's the killer feature, as data recovery is part of my job and HDDs are almost always a total loss. Again, if you're good about saving in more than one place etc this may not warrant the price tag.

But just like everything else to recover a few dollars worth of games and songs someone would probably charge you a few thousand or in some cases maybe nearly a hundred thousand dollars to recover it. That's not what I'm concerned about. I could see it being a selling point for business class SSDs but I doubt most consumers need a feature like that.

It's not a complicated operation at all. Just plug the SSD in as a secondary drive using an OS that doesn't attempt to write to initialize the drive (Linux). Then drag and drop your stuff onto a working volume. Easy as that. I can see home users having important data too (tax forms, family pictures, school projects, work presentations, etc). SSDs make more sense once you have used one though. I would say bang for your buck they are the best single upgrade you can get as far as something that will make your PC "feel" faster. An Atom netbook with an SSD will seem faster to an uneducated user than a Core2 duo or even a first gen i3 with a standard HDD. That said, any amount of money spent is frivolous if you are already satisfied with the machine you already have.
