ECC -less performance? Overclocking with pc2-4200 or pc2-6400?

I have a couple of questions here that maybe some of you experts can handle. As you can see below I have my 945 running at 4.34 ghz - from an FSB of 255. When I play FEAR/Oblivion its a little chunky getting around corners/outside and I fear my 1GB of ram is holding me back.

Question:1

Can I get 2x1GB sticks of value ram rated at 266mhz and will this have no effect on my overclock since my FSB wont pass 266 anyway? Currently my ocz pc2-6400 runs at 3:2 ratio at 382 mhz. Overkill for my 255 fsb?

Question:2

I've seen ECC ram go for cheaper on places like ebay. How much performance loss is there from the error checking?

Question:3

I have an Asus p5wd2 Premium running the 955x chipset. Can I use "high density chips"? (they are cheaper and usualy generic brands like nanya, samsung). Any performance difference from low density chips?

Thanks for your help on these issues guys!

Hi mate,

266 memory is running at 133*2, the fsb/mem speed is 133
a little slow for your needs

I would check that your mobo can run ECC memory before touching it,

ECC memory generally ends up in servers, I tried some in my mobo, Im sure it says in the manual that itll take ecc, but threw up upon bootup and didnt want to play ball.
As for overclocking, im not sure. I have 2 sticks of `normal` hp branded 333(166*2) memory, itll run fine up to 400(200*2)

good luck anywayz!

Thanks for the reply bugbash. I'm wondering about the ecc since there is a local ebay seller that puts out 2GB's of infineon pc4200 ecc ram every week that I could just pick up localy and save myself a bundle. My motherboard is designed to handle ecc modules so it shouldn't be a problem. Pc 4200 runs at 266 mhz with an effective rate of 533 Mhz so I reason that it should have no effect on my oc, i believe you were refering to pc2100 which runs at 133 mhz

ECC RAM is only for server use really. ECC ram hurts gaming and overall system performance. This is because the RAM Checks for errors in any instructions given. Thus it means it takes longer to stream data ths the system suffers. I would avoid it if you are gaming.

Thanks for the info, I'll steer away from ecc ram then since I primarily use this system to waste my time with games

Anybody know anything about my other questions?

Great. I blew $255 on 2gb of ddr800 ECC RAM. I can't even get it to run at the stock 4-4-4-12, it will only run at 5-6-6-18. This has been so frustrating...

Oh bad luck. Perhaps sell it to someone and get some replacement RAM. Sorry to hear this.

Going to try to flash the BIOS. The problem is, hardly nobody I know will want to spend this kind of cash on RAM. The few I do know, wouldn't buy it because of the timings.
