Power requirements (AMPS on 12v rail) for Athlon x2 and Geforce 9400 GT

Hardware

Core System.
Athlon 64 x2 4200+
Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H
Geforce 9400 GT
2 Sticks of DDR2-800 RAM
Opitcal Drive
1x SATA HDD
1x PATA HDD
2x 120mm case fans
PCI Creative Live 5.1 Soundcard

Extras
USB Mouse
USB Lexicon Omega Pro (Audio Interface)
USB m-audio keystation 49e (MIDI Controller, USB powered, no DC 12V)

I currently have a 500w supply that I was given that has the following specs.

PowerHousePc
PPH512TUV (MPT-251)
Output 500w max
+5v 25A
+12V 13A

Now what I want to know is, what is the minimum AMPS on the 12v rail I'd need for a system like the one above. My understanding is for a system like the one above, you'd need 18-20 AMPS on the 12V rail minimum.

About 12A honestly. Grab a Corsair CX430v2; not because you need 430W, but because it's one of the cheapest good PSUs on the market.

EVGA list 18AMPS for their 9400 GT card.

"Minimum of a 300 Watt power supply
(minimum +12 Volt current rating of 18 amps)"

Trust me. wink.gif And in any case the PSU I recommended has 28A on the +12V so it's a moot point.

Thanks for the replies. But do you have an official article I can read on power supply requirements?

The thing is, you don't want to go by just the amperage readings, as they don't really mean much. You have a "500w" unit (claimed), and it only shows 12a on the 12v rail. 12a x 12v (amps x volts = watts), that's only 144w that your PSU is capable of delivering, at MAXIMUM. Meaning it could easily blow with 100w sustained draw.

Getting something of quality is going to make a FAR better impact on your system's stability, and ability to NOT catch fire. Rather than just going in blind by the "amperage required by EVGA". A 9400GT is only like a 40-50w graphics card. It takes very little power to run it. Your x2 is probably a 95w processor.

Long story short, get the cheapest, good, reliable unit and you'll be fine. Currently, Phaedrus is correct, the Corsair CX430 is what you'd want.

Also, here's some very handy tools for you:

FAQ: Recommended Power Supplies (quality ones)
PSU Calc (which will tell you how much power you ACTUALLY need, and it will spit out good quality units as recommendations)
