[DT/NASA] "Water-World" Discovered 41 Light Years From Earth

"Superearth" is a bit toasty with a sun-facing temperature of 2,000 Kelvin (3,140 degrees Fahrenheit)

Affixed in an 18-hour tidally locked orbit, 55 Cancri e is a bit like Earth, although in many ways altogether alien.

The water-world planet is located in a system with at least 5 planets just 41 light years from Earth. The tidal-locking means that its orbit takes the same amount of time that it takes to rotate on its axis -- hence the same "side" of the planet is always facing the Sun. If Earth were tidally locked (which it is not), a particular side (say North and South America) would enjoy 24-hour days, while the opposite side (Asia) would be cloaked in perpetual darkness.

Cool. Maybe it has flaming mermaids living there.

Why does it seem like half of the Superearths they tell us about are tidal locked?

Also, yeah, the water might be at earth-like temps near the day/night line... but the whole lacks-an-atmosphere thing kind of makes that a dull point. Forcing an atmosphere would require us to start the planet spinning into a day/night cycle, and quite fast at that (think 1 hour day/night since it's already a 17h rotation), but we would need to keep it on its orbital path since it's already gone through the whole orbit-clearing thing. Then we've got the lovely concept of the radiation from a star being that close...

We may be close to needing a new planet, but I don't think this planet would be much good for anything short of the extraterrestrial-terraforming equivalent of the Mona Lisa. And we haven't even learned how to paint yet. Mars isn't far away, we should start looking into ways to get sustainable colonies there. Use the Moon for finger painting.

interesting analogy...

Very interesting, but the most important factor IMO, after water of course, is that it needs to be geologically active so there's some kind of magnetic field for radiation protection. This is why Mars will never, EVER be habitable. The only way to make it so would be an incredibly large collision with another object to reheat the core and jump-start the magnetic field. Admittedly, I skimmed. It's late and I'm tired as hell.

Well, maybe not habitable in the sense that Earth is, but we can still build underground and use big shielded windows.

Anyways, finding a big chunk of water out there can only be a good thing.

.

You do realize that this planet is 41 light years away. It is almost impossible with current tech to even travel 1 light year.

the only planet with no liquid water discovered in our solar system is saturn, neptune has more liquid water than the entire mass of the earth, that stuff is everywhere
