So much pain this game caused me lol and so much fun, and so much cash pumped into the arcade machine. Man i loved this game so much as a kid.

Practically every game pre 2000.

Don't get me wrong there are a few new games that are difficult but they are very far and few between.

Oh and Batman Forever for SNES! Could never get past the clown level where you have to find the timebombs.

Megamanx was pretty easy for me back when I played it when I was like 6. Although the final Sigma battle was super difficult that I could not beat it. I came back to it every 6 months or so to try my hand at it again.I started gaming on the old SNES when I was 2. Found secret parts in super mario world that my parents couldn't find out and even beat it before them, although the final Bowser fight scared me so much that I had to have someone in the room with me to be able to play it LOL. But whenever I was completely stumped by a game I would come back to it every 6 months to try my hand at it because I thought if I was older I would be smarter and figure out how to beat said game.

But yea what happened to games giving people challenges? Everything is so dumbed down and easy nowadays. I have to put a game on the hardest difficulty and sometimes even get mods to make it harder (looking at you Skyrim) for me to get a challenge and not beat it too fast.

I never had TES: Arena, but I remember it took me nearly 2 and a half years to fully finish TES: Daggerfall... Elder Scrolls was never too hard from the combat perspective, yet the sheer amount of things to do in every game made them so time consuming... I think Daggerfall was by far the most expansive game world, despite the fact that the environment was basically replicated for every city/village. For us TES fans, I do know Bethesda just recently released the entire anthology for like $80... hmmm... do I want to surrender most all of my free time for the next 3 or so years to play them all through consecutively?

Was a game back in the DOS and Windows 95 days, Rules of Engagement 2. The game had a massive 300 page manual and the game play was about as deep as you could get at the time.

The games I had most difficulty with back in the day were Ecco the dolphin, Raiden and I'd say Captain comic. I bought Ecco in the last steam sale, haven't got to it yet though. I'd love to play another Raiden game.

Probably most games made before ~03' (or whenever regenerative health became the norm). It's kind of hard to find a game where the highest difficulty is actually a challenge. Out of the last 3 modern games I've played recently XCOM EU, Farcry3, Batman Arkham+AC only XCOM:EU was actually challenging (and so challenging I couldn't go from classic IM to impossible IM without crying). Far cry 3 was insultingly easy on it's highest diff. Batman was easy except for 1 part in Arkham which was satisfyingly challenging, AC had none that I remember. And I find myself never getting any body armor/health upgrades in any games that carry them like FC3 and the Batman franchise. Forgot about SWAT 4. Trying to play it on its hardest difficulty where you need a score of 95 to advance is just frustrating. You can't take any lethal firearms (or maybe your allowed one legal kill). It's all bean-bag shotgun and tasers.

But as to answer your question The hardest game I can remember right now was MegaMan X. When I was a kid alot of games were difficult to beat and I realized at an early age (like 5-6) that if I was older, these games would be easier. And I was right! As I got older many games I could not beat before I could finally beat. OH! I just remembered one particular game for the SNES that was frustratingly hard. That stupid Batman Forever game. I could never get past the the clown level with the bomb.

Just remembered another pretty hard one. The second Turok for N64. That was hard as hell and some levels were pretty creepy. I never really beat it but to date that is the funnest game to play with cheats.
