Friends system has issues. MB or CPU?

I was trying to help a friend diagnose his computer today, it will not boot up. Turn it on and it just sits on a black screen with the light on the monitor flashing. I grabbed my old core2duo machine before I went over to swap some parts around to see if itd shed some light on the situation. I tried my PSU and video card from my old machine, the computer still didnt do anything. I think either his CPU or MB might have bit the dust. Its an AMD phemon something or another processor, not sure the exact model and I have nothing to test it in- all my hardware is Intel.

Whats the easiest way to test if either a CPU or Motherboard is done for?

I dragged it home with me. I cannot get it to POST or get into the BIOS no matter what I do. Ive taken the MB completely out of the case and set it up with one of my PSUs. Nothing but a black screen when you turn it on.

I also found something on the web saying that if you start it with no RAM, the MB should make a long beep kind of like if you forget to plug in the 12v line on a graphics card. I scrounged a system speaker out of an old system and tried this. couldnt get beeps out of it no matter what I did. with ram, without ram.

Sounds like the mobo is dead. Do you still have warranty on it?

I doubt its got a warranty remaining its a few year old system. Im going to stop by microcenter tomorrow and see if they have a board to stick the CPU in to test it. No sense messing with it if hed have to buy a new CPU and MB. Itd just be better to get the CPU/MB combo from microcenter.
