Asus Sabertooth 990FX Ram

post #1 of 6

It says it only supports up to 1866mhz ram. I was wondering if it's at all possible to OC ram past 1866mhz on this motherboard.

Im sure you can, ive seen option in bio's upto 2400Mhz !! :O

If you have ram that can handle the frequency etc then try it.

yup, but to oc your ram you will have to raise your FSB speed make sure you can do that on your processor...

Yes the mobo makers list what their products will "officially" support. It's very typical to be able to OC beyond those guaranteed specs.

A Phenom II 1100T Thuban CPU however tends to be limited to around ~1800 MHz. RAM frequency as the Internal Memory Controller (IMC), is the limiting factor, not the mobo or higher frequency rated RAM. Since your CPU is unlocked you won't need to OC the FSB you can just change the RAM ratio/multiplier to test out OC'ing options. Obviously you can also up the FSB to OC the RAM but that alters other settings which you may not desire to change.

On the Phenom II your NB speed needs to be 3 time the memory base speed and Most To All Phemon II x6 NB speed will hit 3000. So that means you maybe able to use DDR3 2000 in your rig.

Memory speed = NB speed
1333 = 2000
1600 = 2400
1800 = 2700
1866 = 2799
2000 = 3000

EDIT
If you are talking about FX chips just leave the NB speed/HT speed in auto. The FX chip can handle DDR3 2400.

With a Phenom II
The bios will let you choose up to 1600.
With FX chip
The bios will let you choose up to 2400.
Anything higher you need to OC the ram with FSB.
