Should I Update My Entire Rig Or Just My Video Cards?

Thread Starter
Check out my rig in sig. Should I upgrade my entire rig or just the video cards? I've been waiting a while for a complete rig update however, there aren't to many games I can't max out with this rig (BF3, Crysis).

What do you all think?

I think you'd still be fine with that chip + a new vid card TBH.

Drop a 670 in there and you won't have anything to worry about since you have a relatively high overclock on that chip.

Just a card, the performance difference from getting new CPU, ram, mobo is just not worth it. Grab a high end like I did and never look back.

While I do agree the EVGA GTX480 on Newegg is a hell of a steal, keep in mind it does run extremely hot compared to the 5xx and 6xx series cards.

If you have enough ambient cooling it shouldn't be an issue, but when I had mine it just dumped heat into my room.

Ideal candidate for some water cooling!

Sounds like a nice upgrade. It won't be huge +FPS in all cases, but in situations where you're presently vram limited it could make a huge difference.

As mentioned though 480's run fairly hot and loud ... but you're likely already used to that with your current setup thumb.gif

I say go for it ... 480's at $209 provide monstrous bang-for-buck.

I agree with everyone else. Even though your c2q is older hardware you have enough of an overclock to compensate for now. But a DX11 compatible card would certainly make a nice upgrade. But a single 670 would run a lot quieter than two 480's. Plus you would need to upgrade your psu if you bought two 480's.
