Oblivion OBMM Archive Invalidation question

Thread Starter
Going to fire up Oblivion in the very, very near future, just trying to get all my mods in order for the first time. I'm using OBMM to create OMODs of everything and I had a question about ArchiveInvalidation: obviously I'm not copying/pasting things into the Oblivion directory so I won't edit the file manually so I was wondering how I did it with OBMM.

As an example: I'm trying to OMOD the Unofficial Official Oblivion Patch update 3.4.1 and one of the steps reads as such:

3.) Add the 5 following lines to ArchiveInvalidation.txt and save it:
Textures/Armor/ImperialWatch/M/Gauntlet.dds
Textures/Creatures/Zombie/ZombieHair.dds
Textures/Weapons/SilverShortSword.dds
Textures/Clothes/UpperClass/Shoes01.dds
Textures/Plants/MiscMoth01.dds

Now, again, trying to do this via OBMM. My question is how. I've gathered that I put everything into an OBMM, create the OMOD, go to Utilities and then Archive Invalidation but I don't know where to go to from there. Do I just choose BSA Redirection? Or do I choose BSA Alteration or Invalidation? And if so, what files types do I include? Just textures? And what of the other options?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is the only thing standing in the way of me and Oblivion right now.

I see you haven't gotten a response after almost a month. I'm new to Oblivion and I guess, since it's dated, not many people are active. tiredsmiley.gif
I know next to nothing about the intimate details of BAIN/Wrye Bash, OBMM, BOSS, etc...modding in general. But I think I can help you with this, if you haven't figured out what to do already. There's something called "ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated" that seems to make those adjustments under the "Archive Invalidation" button (alteration vs. redirection) on OBMM unnecessary. You can DL it here: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/10724/

I'd say install that first, then as far as your UOP 3.4.1 update is concerned, you may have a couple of different concepts tangled together. It sounds like you have the "manual" version, which is just a zip/rar of the files in their respective folders, and those in a "Data" folder, which is meant to just be dragged and dropped over the "Data" folder in your Oblivion installation directory, clicking "Yes to all" for overwriting folders. The OMOD version is the one that will involve OBMM (many tutorials on the web), and the installer obviously just does it all for you.

I'll bookmark this (even though replies should go to email) and check it periodically. I know what it's like to be behind the crowd, scratching my head on issues others have faced and left behind. headscratch.gif

Thanks for the reply. These days I've noticed more and more that threads can go completely unanswered, whereas in the golden days I could solve a problem within an hour, getting responses every couple minutes.

Anyways, I solved my own problem by ditching it entirely. I reached out on another forum and received a pretty disappointing response but it gave me what I needed. I was told rather explicitly to ditch OBMM and learn Wrye Bash. The tutorials for Wrye Bash all sucked so I avoided it. In the end, OBMM failed and I was given some basic instruction with Wrye so I gave it a shot. As it turns out, it's incredibly simple (about 8 lines of instruction necessary) and it did the job I needed it to.

Welcome to the Oblivion community, though. It is an old game but it's one of my absolute favourites. I got about 50 mods or so all working via Wrye Bash and it was looking pretty damn good. I ended up replacing my CPU and mobo (currently without computer waiting for a new BIOS chip) but I'm gonna get back on the boat hopefully within the week.

If you ever need or want any help with Wrye Bash PM me and I'll let you know how I got everything working. Worked out really well in the end.

Yes, I learned about Wrye Bash, too. It takes care of the whole Invalidation issue itself! I still use OBMM for a few things that Wrye Bash won't install - OBSE plugins that carry security flags of some sort with the .dlls. It has to do with User account privileges or something. I'm running XP 32, and I'm always on an Admin account, so I don't understand why it won't work. I'd prefer doing everything w/ Wrye Bash, but I don't mind doing it this way so much.

I hope you can get back to it soon. I've taken over a week just trying to get my Mods installed. Having a modding compatriot is encouraging. thumb.gif

I'm glad to hear it's not too complicated, since you've actually gotten it up and running fully. I think I've got a general handle on the load order priority concept, but I find more mods, and I uninstall everything from the bottom up until I get to the place I want to put it, then go back down installing again. I've gathered that archive Installation order doesn't matter, only load order before making a Bashed Patch under the "Mods" tab. Is that solid, because it seems like I get different results (e.g., needing to anneal some mods) with different orders under the "Installers" tab?

Right now I honestly can't help you. I should be getting my new BIOS chip tomorrow morning, though, Wednesday at the latest, so when I get things poppin' again I can let you know what I had worked out.

From what I can remember, though, load order is the only thing that matters. Installation does not (though I installed the large mods first, then the small mods just to be safe). I also went through it very thoroughly, testing after every major mod to check my FPS. In the end it was bogged down to the 20's and ran pretty rough, so hopefully this upgrade smooths things out.

Again though, sorry I can't be of more help with Wrye Bash right away. I need to have it at my fingertips to be of any real help. I don't have enough experience to speak from memory just yet. I'll be in touch though!

jiso: I'm back in action (more or less). Do you have BOSS installed? It sorts your load order for you. If you still need some help/guidance/reassurance let me know and we'll go from here/whether you've got BOSS installed.

You're true blue, man! No obligations, though, of course.thumb.gif

I have BOSS, Wrye, OBMM, and TES4LODGEN. I've also considered PyFFI. Any thoughts on it?

BOSS is detecting my mods well enough, it seems, but I think my first step might be cleaning edits in the DLCs and a few of my mods. I may have other issues, but since the DLCs are going to be there regardless, it seems top priority. As far as the TES4Edit tutorial, I have yet to grasp dependencies.

I tried to build a bashed patch with everything as is, but I can't get past the load screen before a CTDT. I tried to deactivate everything except basic Oblivion and DLCs in Wrye, OBMM, and the launcher data files list. Still crashed. Rebuilt patch. Still crashed. I wonder if the overwrites I approved in OBMM changed some things that won't revert back to vanilla, even though I deactivate them. Other than that, the only thing I installed straight-up manually was Saddlebag 1.24, and I doubt that's the problem.

I just wanna play!!!

Okay, I'm not an expert so I'm going to try to replicate what I did for you.

Step 1: get rid of OBMM immediately. Just can it. I got rid of it and so should you.
Step 2: here's how I install a mod. Drag the zip folder into the appropriate Wrye Bash installers folder. Load up Wrye Bash, enter installers tab. Right-click on mod you want installed, click "install". Everything you should good and green. Go to the "mods" tab. You should see your new mod. Make sure the box beside it is checked. Go to the bottom and click on BOSS and let it do its thing. Make sure "Bashed Patch" is always the last thing in the list, even if BOSS moves it. Right-click on the Bashed Patch, go to "Rebuild Patch (CBash *BETA*). I know sometimes you'll get a pop-up about disabling something. If you do, just allow it to happen and it will re-enable itself. The patch should build itself and then you should be good. I launch Oblivion from Wrye Bash and I'm good to go. You only need to use TES4LODGen if you're doing something with draw distances. I tried to download Saddlebag and try it and couldn't get it working with Wrye and couldn't. I would wipe everything and start absolutely fresh if I were you. Just to be sure. Clean install. And try it a couple mods at a time. Start with the big ones that change parts of the game and work down. Only way to be sure, really. I never had a single problem install my 50 or so mods. If you know of any that definitely give you trouble, let me know and maybe I can help. Other then that, best of luck.

And as far as PyFFI, never heard of it. Everything worked perfect for me without it so I'd have to thing it's unnecessary.

EDIT: Ooooh quick question: do you have OBSE installed?
I do have OBSE.

Installation from zip/rar archives in Wrye Bash has been straight forward enough for the most part, but the Unofficial patches wouldn't install even though they come in that format.

I learned about unpacking omods and other archives (e.g., ones with multiple versions, e.g., Optimized Distant Land MAX - 50% & 75%) to projects so that they can be used by Wrye Bash, but that doesn't work in every case, from my admittedly limited experience. Is that what you have in mind? I'll give it another try.

In the meantime, I'm working with a guy on another forum to figure out why Wrye Bash won't install OBSE plugin dlls. He says it's an account permissions issue. That might help with the other problems I mentioned above.

Thanks for the input so far! I guess I'll get to un/reinstalling Oblivion...

Also, I had a problem with BOSS icon not showing up at the bottom of the Wrye Bash window. I fixed it, before I did a full reinstall (this will be my 2nd), now I don't remember what I did. I'll try reinstall the utilities that I'll be keeping and see if it comes out okay.

Hmm, XP 32 could be causing some troubles. Naturally I'd tell you to upgrade but I imagine you have your reasons.

To install BOSS, I went here and downloaded the archive, not the installer version. Just extract the BOSS folder into your Oblivion directory (it should four items: folders named API and Docs and two .exe's named BOSS and BOSS GUI). From there, everything worked fine for me.

You mentioned unpacking omod's and I will stress again to divorce yourself completely from anything OBMM-related. If you have an omod of something big, too bad; redownload. Originally I downloaded all my mods, extracted them and converted them to omod's. Realizing the futility after it all failed, I redownloaded everything as the original .zip, .rar or .7z file it came in, just to be safe.

That's really odd that you're having trouble with the unofficial patches. They were my first install and they went fine. From the .7z files and everything. Does XP have User Account Controls or anything? I'm far removed from the days of XP so I really can't be of much help there. That said, again, I'm going to have to recommend the upgrade. So far the major difference that between my modding success and your lack thereof is operating system. Could be an issue, could not.
