I'm pretty sure the current version on VMware offloads GPU workloads onto your main GPU though OpenGL if i'm not mistaken. So when he is watching a 1080p video it should be fine. Don't quote me on this though.

You should try watching a movie in VMware and see if it puts more stress onto the CPU or off loads it onto the GPU with afterburner.

The problem I have with using W7 as a guest is that I'll have to buy another copy for it. Just seems a bit of a waste of money just for a bedroom tv. Especially since all I'll be using it for is XBMC.

Did you go down the route of running separate displays? Separate sound, controls etc? On the one computer?

what about running xbmcubuntu inside the vmware?  so win7 as host and xbmc in vmware, that way you dont have to buy another copy of windows. also how do you plan to control them? with keyboard and mouse or remote?  because if you use keyboard and mouse you will need to edit you vmx file, to let you assign which  keyboard/mouse  controls which OS.

I was planning on getting a remote for the bedroom. Though it will need to be wireless rather than sensor if you know what I mean, since the HTPC will be through the wall in the other room. I was thinking a remote would be easier to separate from the Host etc.

Though if you say you can edit a file to assign Keyboards, then I might just get another mouse and keyboard for the bedroom instance also.

Yeah I was looking into XBMCubuntu. I'm still waiting for a few bits and pieces to show up like cables etc, before I get the drill out and make some holes etc to set this all up.

This might be out of the question but why not just build another barebone box, if all your doing is running movies and surfing the web, and if you have around 350 $ just make a cheep PC out of it, get one with a HDMI output on the system board and your gtg, i built about 10 of these for varous people that have movie rooms etc, they are very cheep, you can get a small dual core processor and a 2-4 gig of ram and it will run simple tasks... which seems like all you need, if you want add another sound card for a bit more, but the 350 $ package incudes a Bray player as well on the machine in case you want to run that... normally they get the 300 $ just hook it up to the PC to TV and get a wireless KB and Mouse.... Maybe its not what your looking for but to me, its cheep efficent, low power, easy to build and you dont have to mess with that stuff... later on you can just upgrade if you need to but i dont see why you would need to. thumb.gif

I will look into that, but sadly here in NZ I doubt I could piece one together that cheap.

At the moment this VM thing is costing me 30 bucks for a wireless keyboard and mouse lol.
