Gaming laptop for $500? - Page 4

post #31 of 46
I don't know what you've decided but how about this

HP Pavilion G6-2005AX Laptop AMD A8 Quad Core/4GB/500GB/Win 7 HB/1GB Graphics

http://www.flipkart.com/hp-pavilion-g6-2005ax-laptop-amd-a8-quad-core-4gb-500gb-win-7-hb-1gb-graphics/p/itmdaa2xq7jnnvch?pid=COMDAA2USZGGXKZK&ref=0c679752-ef8a-404a-b3a4-878f3a8424d8

Its Indian portal, and everything here in India is costly when it comes to computers and electronics. I'm guessing price should be around $550 in US.

It looks good but I think it will overheat very fast. $500 laptops aren't for playing and not really worth the money.

You will have to wait for a sale, or purchase a refurb.

To give you an idea, a laptop with an i5-2410M, a Mushkin Chronos Enhanced SSD, and a 6770M can play BF3 on medium settings fairly well.

My brother's previous laptop was a HP DV6T select edition with an i5-2410M, 6 GB RAM, HD 6770M graphics, 15.6" widescreen, 1366x768 resolution, BD-rom drive, and a hard drive which we replaced with the aforementioned Mushkin Chronos. It cost $798 after taxes, but it came with a free Xbox 360 which we sold for $200, bringing the total cost down to $598.

You're going to be hard pressed to find a laptop to handle BF3 well. Be prepared to wait for AMD's Trinity line, and hope for a miracle when it comes to pricing. Check slickdeals.net on a regular basis, though don't expect amazing deals until July/August when the school year starts up and manufacturers offload inventory with back-to-school sales.

======

For those concerned about overheating: keep the laptop on a hard flat surface (like a desk, not a bed or carpet!), preferably elevated with a CPU cooling mat of sorts. The laptop will definitely get warm but it's manageable. My brother played BF3 for a couple hours on his laptop without it overheating and crashing. Be sure to run on AC power only, and remove the battery since the heat will degrade the lifespan of the battery.

Are the HDD's an easy replace?

EDIT: If you do decide to get this laptop, I strongly suggest spending $20 on another 4GB stick of ram. THis will also improve grapgics performance as the APU is proven to perform better with dual channel ram.
If you want to go even farther I suggest replacing the HDD in it to something like an XT.
I'm planning on soon upgrading the screen in this bad boy to a 1080p panel, the same in the G53. It's a $100 upgrade but I cant stand the screen it currently has.

Check this one out, it has a AMD A6 X4 APU with a HD7670M for graphics. Looked decent to me. And it's only $400. Only real draw back is it has only 4GB's of RAM (you'd probably want 8GB's depending on what games your running) and the HDD is only a 5400 RPM one. Other than that it seems good.

if gaming is a top priority, make sure you avoid the intel HD graphics.
Look for a laptop with at least an Nvidia GT520 or AMD HD65xx series like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246328

there are some game HD6650m benchmarks at the bottom of this page
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6650M.43962.0.html

BF3 = 35 fps at low setting
Crysis 2 = 38.7 fps at medium setting

-edit
famous1994's link above looks like a good deal.
It will probably run BF3 at medium with no AA
