Is the drive plugged into the native SATA chipset? Make sure it is.

Also, if the drive has never been formatted before you need to format it on diskpart for it to show. details on doing so in my Windows 7 install guide.

As if I need a driver for the HDD to be recognized... Since when do you need a driver for a SATA 6.0Gb drive?

Ive had the same issue PLENTY of times trying to install W7 from a USB stick. I can't figure out the solution. My final fix for it was to burn W7 and use the good ol' DVD drive.

Heh... I had the exact opposite problem one time. I was trying to install onto a Netbook using an external DVD drive. No dice - never detected the internal drive, for whatever reason.

I used Microsoft's USB Writer tool to stick the installer on a USB stick... fired it up and the internal drive detected fine. Bleh.

I'm beginning to wonder if it needed the driver for the external DVD drive, and just had the wrong error message. Not working on USB3 ports would confirm that, since those also require separate drivers.

I installed with the DVD and it went through perfectly. No hitch no need to format the drive. I did however not try to switch from the USB 3.0. When I tested the stick on the other puters, it was all USB 2.0's...
