You could possibly get a better system with the following:
ASUS P5B deluxe motherboard 200$
GSKill PC8500 "black model" 500$
E6600 Conroe = 300$
You can only run one video card on the P5B. But, at 1280X1024, who cares. You will have a screaming CPU and memory system. Doing next generation physics processing in software will greatly benefit from that.
NOW...You have spent 1000$ and have a screaming single GPU system. Wait 4 months or so, and either replace your motherboard with a Nvidia 6XX system
ORRRRRR!!! Get a single 8800GTX from Nvidia for about 600$. New PSU (750watts) for 200$ and you are at 1700$ total. And all you had to do was swap out your video card at that point. Now you are DirectX 10 compliant. IMHO: This is the way to go.
You have ALOT of options. Don't fence yourself into SLI like I did. I REGRET it.
