Well, some mods that you definitely need to have:

REX 2.0 (Real Environment extreme)
REX OverDrive
http://www.realenvironmentxtreme.com/

for terrain textures:
UTX (Ultimate TerrainX)
http://www.scenerysolutions.com/ut_fsx_usa.html

GEX (Ground EnvironmentX)
http://gex.flight1.net/

About GEX and UTX, there is some sort of a method which to install when...can't remember though.

3D contrails:

FSX looked good for its time. But the ground textures are awful once you get up close regardless of what add-on you have. The flight dynamics leave much to be desired compared to the real thing and the code is ancient so it doesn't take advantage of the latest and greatest hardware. After flying X-Plane 10, I'll never go back to FSX.

You are going to need a very big SSD for FSX. That said you should be more worry about CPU and RAM before worry about SSD.

load times will be reduced...but you need to have a monster CPU to get anywhere. GPU is not important.

also any ORBX addons for pacific northwest are amazing. and its not all about the scenery guys. PMDG 747-400 and PMDG 737 NGX are the best addons ive ever seen for FSX, and both aircraft are licensed by Boeing. and to get that licensing, the plane must fly like the real thing.

also, tileproxy sucks. it looks out of place and you cant fly very fast or youll get blurries
