Let me start by stating what I'm trying to "solve". I am looking to play HD MKV videos in my bedroom, which would be served from my home server.
At this time, I can *partially* do this by running PS3 Media Server on my home server (basement), which in turn can be played via the PS3 using DLNA. The quality however is questionable, given that it is being done over wireless. Running a wire is tough in my particular situation, and it would probably be cheaper to just purchase a "powerline network" bridge, which goes for ~$100.
Alternatively, I could just build a HTPC with the spare parts I have lying around. This includes a Q9550, and 4GB RAM. I additionally have a GTX260 and some 500GB HDDs lying around. Won't I still have problems, given I'd be using wireless still? Not really, since it's really the PS3s crappy NIC that is the crux of the quality issue. Plus, on a HTPC I can always hack it up to buffer my shows, or just copy them over, prior to viewing.
Anyhow... my only major problem here is keeping such a HTPC fairly quite. Is it even possible, or worth it? The Q9550 I've had overclocked forever. If I wanted to passively cool it, I imagine I would need to underclock it? What passive cooler should I use? What about the gtx 260?
As you can see, I'm fairly "lost" and could use a few pointers.
