Barrier at 3.4 GHz?

Thread Starter
I posted a topic in the Intel - Mem section about FSBRAM and then JCB was trying to help me with some overclock settings. But this is my problem:

Why is it that there seems to be a barrier when I get close to 3.4 ghz and anything above? I am running a Pentium D 920 and an ASUS P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe. Has anyone ever had this problem? What am I doing wrong?

The barrier is the FSB and the memory bus for that chipset. You can try to manually control the memory timings and speed to get the CPU up to a higher MHZ. But, this is a well documented limitation with the NV4 and NV5XX based chipsets.

So what is limitating me? The cpu side or the mem side? What things can I do to get around this barrier?

Right now Im running it at 3.2 wich is about 915 FSB, but whenever I get past the 965 range i havent gotten it to be stable after booting and i cant get it to boot at 970. I havent really tried messing with anything past 970 becuase if it wont boot past 970 then why waste my time trying setting that Im just deaming would boot.

Any ideas? Between 965 and 970 FSB is approaching the 3.4 ghz range.

You SHOULD be able to get to 1000FSB. Which is, pretty much, the limit. Did you try boosting your NB voltage and your FSB termination voltage?

No, I have not tried either of those? What are the limits I should stay within as far as voltage wise?

Alright, so nevermind what I said. I was able to get it past 3.4. It was running fairly stable at 3.51 but I didnt have the chance to run a bunch of stress tests, only a couple, and it was running fine.

Thanks, and 4 would be nice But I think I am going to wait until I get my water cooling before I try to get to 4 because I dont think the stock intel heatsink would hold up at that speed. But at 3.51 running OCCT for 20 minutes, both cores maxxed, the temps got up to 41. So.. I didnt think that 41 was that high on a stock heatsink, but until I get water, Im not going to try to push it.
