OC 3570K - Using 5 CPU temp programs, can't get the right temp

post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
I have just begun overclocking. I have the 3570K on P8Z77-V PRO with an aftermarket air cooler running 4.6ghz stable on 1.28vcore.

Problem I am having is trying to find the correct CPU temp readings under load. I want to make sure I am not damaging or overheating the chip but am not sure which readings to trust.

^^^
I am running 5 programs at the moment with the CPU under full load using Prime95.

These two are very similiar.

Asus AI Suite II
CPU = 57c

SpeedFan
Core0 = 48C
Core1 =54C
Core2 = 53C
Core3 = 49C

However the next three are very consistent with each other but are different to the first two

RealTemp, HM Monitor & Core Temp

Core0 = 63 - 69C
Core1 =67 - 72C
Core2 = 67 - 73C
Core3 = 67 - 71C

With so many different readings, which one do you trust?

Cpu temp is different from core temp. For core temp monitoring you can trust either real temp or core temp thumb.gif

Real Temp seem to be the safest option imo.

Ai Suite II seem to be crap, because if you set a fan to speed up to 100% at 75 degrees, then that fan will never speed up to 100%, because the temp reading seem to be off.

I have configured the Ai Suite II to speed up the fans based on the correct readings from the other programs. For example if CoreTemp is 80c then Ai Suite will say 60c so I have the fans at 100% when Ai Suite hits 60c.

What is the difference between CPU Temp and Core Temp and which one is the best to monitor?
post #5 of 9
The CPU temp is a meaningless number. Intel CPUs use the core temp data to control thermal throttling and thermal shut down. The whole reason that Intel originally went to individual sensors on each core was because the CPU temperature data was useless.

You need to keep an eye on the hottest spots on the core. That's what core temperature data is all about. The difference between the CPU temperature and peak core temperature can vary depending on load and what part of the CPU is being loaded. Asus should add core temperature data to their AI Suie so users have an option.

I use HWMonitor myself.

I believe that the consensus on this site is that speed fan is unreliable

And that asus ai suit is also pretty much junk

Stick with one of the last 3

I believe coretemp is better for amd cpus and realtemp is better for intell (at, least thats how it use to be)

Never used hwmonitor

I use the BIOS to control fan speed:core temp ratio. Its the BIOS that engages the throttle anyway, no? If it reaches the TJMax, then it'll be quickest to throttle.

I went with CoreTemp, all of the other "accurate" programs (RealTemp, HM Monitor) pretty much were displaying the same thing but I liked CoreTemps simple layout and the taskbar display of the CPU Temps.

Cheers for the help \0/
