[TF] Comcast Protests “Shake Down” of Alleged BitTorrent Pirates

Comcast has run out of patience with the avalanche of BitTorrent lawsuits in the United States. The ISP is now refusing to comply with court-ordered subpoenas, arguing that they are intended to “shake down” subscribers by coercing them to pay settlements. Copyright holders have responded furiously to Comcast’s new stance, claiming that the ISP is denying copyright holders the opportunity to protect their works.

Well then.

Go Comcast for protecting the rights of people and for arguing against "out of court" settlements!

I thought Comcast was one of the worst companies to have as an ISP because they were so brutal against pirates? I've had so many Comcast friends lose their internet because they downloaded something.

This is a very surprising, and good, thing. If all ISPs did this, they couldn't shut them all down. Hopefully more follow, otherwise I see Comcast putting up a fight but ultimately giving in.

And people thought I was stupid for going Comcast. I get 50/15 for a killer price, no down time, and I go over my limit and recieve no warnings and have no issues. I don't personally use BitTorrent for downloading my Linux distros, but go Comcast!

I'm wondering. If the courts decide Comcast has to hand over all information for all subpoenas to date with the dire consequence of shutting the company's networks down if they don't comply, isn't it just so easy for Comcast to say something like "Oops, lol. Guys, lol. Hey, guys... all that customer traffic data was lost in an electrical outage, sorry. We have no clue who those IP addresses belong to and it is impossible to identify those 250,000+ customers?" Even if they face a huge fine for the loss of that data, it should be Comcast's easy way out.

It costs them too much money to deal with these subpoenas, and they get nothing from the lawsuits except for maybe disgruntled customers seeking another service provider

The only reason is money, Comcast isn't our knight in shining armor here.

Bingo, they want to protect their bottom line and this is costing them a lot of cash and losing them subscribers en masse. But, if it helps us as well, I'm all for it. Hopefully other ISP's join in and protest such things.
