7850 or 7870 for $40 more?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Have been looking at a MSI TFIII or a PCS+ 7850s, both are roughly $270 shipped
Then of course I stumbled on a deal for a 7870 for $310...that's only $40 more, and I'm very tempted to just go for it.

I know the 7850s are supposed to be the best bang-4-buck, but don't the 7870s still hold their own a bit better when OC'd too?
I game at 1920x1080, just trying to see if it's worth splurging a bit or if I should wait a lil more for a 7850...

TIA smile.gif

You could get a 6950 and unlock it to a 6970 for about 230. I believe that would be the best as far as price and performance.

Yea, I'd thought about that, but (while I know it's a bit irrational)...I want something from the new 7xxx, I haven't had a new card in a while.
Aside from that though there really aren't much to chose from as far as new stock goes w 6950s...and I'm kinda picky redface.gif

After a bit more thought though (edited OP), I think I need to keep around the $300 max mark, so gotta decide if the extra $40 is worth it or not on the 7870

Why not just spend the extra 40 dollars? It has already been shown that you could get more performance for less money. So since you are already going to spend unnecessary funds on something you really don't need to why not spend the extra 40?

It's not entirely about the cost (though that is important), I'd still rather a 7850 over a 6950 because it can keep up with it just fine while having a lower TDP / power-draw.

I would get the 7850 and overclock the crap out of it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121623 This one.

Then later on down the road I would crossfire them if the performance boost is needed. You can handle it easily on your psu. Even 2 of them. I wouldn't waste your money on a 7870. Its price is really bad. smile.gif

Like i said ,if you are going to spend more money for less performance why not just go all the way?

If you've got the funds for a 7870, yes its faster. 7870 overclocked heavily will keep up with a lightly overclocked 7970 or a stock 680. 7850 is a great bang per buck because it keeps up with and sometimes passes the GTX 580. 6950 is actually a good bit slower (after overclocks).

I was just about to post that. I own a house and pay bills so I do take that into consideration now more than when I lived with my parents.

I say get the 7850 and overclock it like mad.
