BT and my case

Thread Starter
Well guys, while playing around and imaging what my setup will look like I realized, the BT cl-p0114 has a 120mm fan that is gonna be about 1/4 of an inch off the side of my case (dimensions courtesy of TheDuke). The opening in the side of my case is 3" (76mm) at best.... Common sense tells me that that fan is NOT gonna be able to pull enough air through that hole...

Attachment 33944

So seeing as how I "think" that all atx form factor cases are close to same dimensions, is there a place I can purchase JUST the side panel?? Preferably would like the side clear so I can see all this cool stuff, with an opening already large enough to accomodate this fan... Even if it does not have the opening I would drill my own holes or cut one and add a grill to fit I just need to find the side.... heck even if its a metal frame with just a clear side nothing special on it thats fine too I will make it work

Thanks in advance

Shaggyt

Also tell me if I'm wrong about this theory

Some manufacturers sell side panels separately, and some do not. That hole might restrict airflow (that's why i like the parallel fans that blow toward exhaust).

Heh I hope that not the case or I'm taking my sawzall to the side of this thing and make my own clear side panel lol

Hmmmm....This is a perfect excuse for a case mod.

Cut the existing hole so that it full encompases the 120, you may have to re-center the new opening so that it aligns with your fan.

Have trepidations? Just post, mucho help from many knowing peoples will fall.

I've got my cordless 18v dewalt drill with a multi step bit (1/8 to 1/2" hole)and my 18 v dewalt sawzall with a bi-metal blade that will do a fine job of making a new opening... just would like to purchase something already made.... Would really love something with a clear side Gotta show off

Are you proficient with power tools? Do you have access to a dremel that has a hole-cutting setup? If so you can have both.

1) cut out case for window.
2) Cut window to fit the fan or fan aperature.

Time-consuming, harder than buying a pre-fab case cover, but the DIY pride is like... "OMG! I did that!"

The 2-step process above is a grossly glib interpretion of what you would have to do, but it you are mechanically inclined, have a steady hand and are patient then you should have no problems.

Seem like I'm pushin' for a mod? Yeah... I like art in all forms

So far I still haven't found just a side for sale so the mod is looking like the way to go... I think a couple of the guys at the shop have a dremmel I could borrow.. as for my own tools mostly just electrical hand tools, multi , 2 drills 1 14.4v Impact dewalt and 18v hammer dill, and 1 18v sawzall....

I know I can't put the plexi on the inside unless I wat that BT fan exposed which with my cat is SUCH a bad idea... I need it on the outside... what would you use for trim around edges to cover whatever method I use to apply plexi to whats left of side... and what would be a good way to go with that?? adhesive, like some type of epoxy?? or screw, bolt it to it??

thanks for helping

You could buy a window mod:

http://www.crazypc.com/products/PX82190.html

And cut the opening yourself. If not, Perhaps riveting plexiglass or acrylic to the case as a window would do. You could use some door (auto) molding to cover the edge of the window material (any auto parts shop should have some).'

I have only cut acrylic with a dremel, so I don't know what plexiglass would be like. Just consider the following:

1) Tape off (Blue Painters Tape) all areas that will remain so that you do not mar the surface.

2) Acrylic gives off a lot of very fine dust, wear some kind of mask (if nothing else a T-shirt will suffice), and use eye-protection. You will want to be looking directly at the cut as it is being made and you don't wanna loose an eye as all your buds will pwn you in FPS gaming.

3) Be mindful of the pressure as you cut, you don't want to warp the case material or crack the acrylic.

Here is an old image of the window I purchased from the link provided above:

Heh and here I thought this would be easy.... I'm thinking of a whole around this big :

Attachment 33958

The green area would be the plexi replacement, I would use a 4" hole saw for the 120mm fan and I would replace the vents that are currently there with a similar pattern of 1/4" holes since the ones there now seems to be vital to keeping card cool....I have everything on front of case taped off forcing air in only through side and through psu.... would this work or is there something about plexi I'm not taking into account??
