AMD-FX 4100 Thermal Question

Thread Starter
Recently, I bought a crapload of stuff for my computer, including a new motherboard (M5A97 Evo) and the FX 4100. Of course, I had intent to overclock the CPU, and right now, it's at 4.4GHz with 1.31volts (surprised how it handled the low voltage compared to these other reviews that I was reading of people saying that they had theirs at the same speed, but at like 1.4 something volts) So, I thought just to make sure there was enough voltage going to it, I decided to stress test it using OCCT. I used the large memory set option, and ran it for about 10 minutes (I know that isnt long enough to determine stability), but my question is, even with low volts and no blue screens or errors appearing, the processor was maxing out at about 71 degrees C. I don't know for sure, but I think that is the max temp that the 4100 is rated for. I want to run the stress test for an hour or so to make SURE it is definitely stable, but I Don't want to mess up the processor by running it at 70 degress C for an hour. Suggestions?

System:
Asus M5A97 Evo
AMD FX 4100 (currently at 4.4GHz and 1.31volts)
4 gigs of Crucial Ballistix DDR3 Ram
HIS HD Radeon 5770 Turbo
600W PSU
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master...I don't know the exact make, but it is a smaller cooler with 3 direct touch heat pipes and a 92mm fan

An FX-4100 should definitely not run that hot at those settings, even with a stock cooler.

You need better cooling. Are you in a hot room? Is your computer case in a closed-in area? What case and case fan configurations are you using? Cable management? Are you sure your CPU cooler is mounted correctly with a very thin layer of TIM (a little extra on the heat pipe gaps)?

I can run my leaky chip at 1.65V and 5GHZ and it does not get that hot.

OP-

It sounds like the Coolermaster HSF that you are using is too modest for an OC'd FX CPU. You most definitely will need a highend HSF to run 4.4 GHz. on an FX CPU without overheating even with modest CPU voltages. Even though AMD lists 70C as the 24/7 Max. core temps for the FX-6100, you may not find that so stable with an FX-4100 which is essentially an FX-8150 with 4 cores disabled.

The link below shows you the thermal efficiency of the popular HSFs for comparison. You'll likely need more than a (3) direct contact heatpipe design with a 92mm fan, HSF.

Darmic, it isnt at alll always that hot. It idles at around 43 C and during moderate activity, like playing BF3, it will get to like 55 C, and the room i am in isnt the coolest room, but its not hot, and the case is in a well ventilated area, in fact, its close to a window that's usually open. Currently, I dont have a cooling config cuz as i said, I just got this computer recently, and I thought my normal 120mm fans would work, but with my motherboard and the case I have, I need the thin 120mm fans, so all i have right now is the fan on the cpu cooler and exhaust. I plan to put an extra exhaust on the top and put 2 intake fans in, one pulling air from underneath the case and one pulling air from the front. &AMD4ME, can you suggest any Cpu coolers that would suit this processor that are $40 or below? (I dont have much of a budget left after buying everything else)?

Upgrade your case cooling first, as this limits even the most awesome heat sinks. It sounds to me like you just need to force cool air from outside into your case so that your heatsink can do its job. Which case do you have? I think Scythe makes thin fans.

Another question, though, what direction is your CPU fan oriented in your case?

Scythe is the brand I was planning on, cuz as what I researched, they are the fan with the most CFM with the least noise (at least most of them), and my heatsink fan is oriented to blow through the heatsink, almost directly to my rear exhaust fan. I have an Thermaltake MSI commander snow edition.
