Black screen unless 2 monitors are plugged in...?

my friend ended up having to take his desktop to school for a presentation a month or two ago (he didn't have a laptop or a flash drive) and whenever the projector was unplugged from his computer, the monitor also went black, and ever since then, once windows has loaded, the screen goes black unless he has his second monitor plugged in. Has anybody had this happen to them and figured out how to fix it?

right click on desktop
hit screen resolution

Under the display selection hit the one that is the laptop screen and under multiple displays select duplicate
