Using my iPod Classic as an External HDD

Thread Starter
I posted a thread in the HDD section and got some help, but figured I should post it here. I want to use my 120GB Classic as an External HDD for my Xbox. If I format it to NTFS will it work? Will it still have the 16GB limit? Also I have an iPod Touch, and this classic has no use. I won't be using it for anything but storage.

Yes the 16GB limit will be active. When you plug it in you should have the option to use it as a storage device, at which point it will be formatted.

If you don't then formatting to NTFS then plugging in should work. (I don't think it uses NTFS, but at that point it will recognize it as a storage device I believe, which will allow you to reformat it on the 360)

The 16GB limit is only if you want to use if for profiles, games etc. If you want to use it as an external hard drive and just put media on it, then there will be no limit you can use all the space.

I wanted to use it for add ons (map packs, etc.). Oh well. A free 16GB device I already had is pretty good I guess... Maybe I'll use the rest for videos (recordings instead of putting them on my HDD)

I've found a good use is playing music while in game. Obviously not much space is required for that, though. (I will say it takes forever for the music to load though, being USB and it seems to need to identify all of the content before beginning) I have about 3GB of music on my flash drive and it takes ~ 3 minutes to actually start.

If its still working properly a 120GB Classic (6G) will easily sell for >$100. Why don't you put it up on CL and use a fraction of what you make to buy a 16GB flash drive for <$10?

Or buy a WD laptop hard drive and replace your 360's? I did this with a 250GB and it works great. (Has to be certain models I believe, and only up to 320GB)

I think what I'm gonna do is open up my 360 HDD and look to see if it is a SATA connection or something. If so, I''ll buy a notebook HDD to replace it.

Do you have a Slim or the older version? If you have a Slim it's just flash and plug in. The HD port is on the bottom in a slightly hidden compartment towards the back. Just slips right in. For the older version it's a little more complicated. You have to take apart the HD enclosure and replace the drive in it.

That won't work. It needs to be a specific model and you have to flash the firmware. Its not a PS3.
