X79/X58 Ram

Thread Starter
I am switching my system from X58 to X79/3930k and is wondering if memory will make much of a difference in overclocking?

My guess is no, seems overclocking looks easier than my X58/P55 age, with only multiplier changes, however is using >DDR3-1600 ram make any difference in overclock beyond 4.5ghz? just want to confirm if a cheap Patriot G2 1600 1.5v or ripjaws will do the jobs.

Secondary, while I am giving my X58 to my brother for his photo/video editing (ram sold), I am looking at the AMD Entertainment Edition 4GB 1600 1.5v stick which costs around $15 each, so less than $100 taxed for 24GB BUT it does not come with XMP. I have never tried ram without XMP on Intel plateform. Shoudl I be worried about it or I simply mannually set the timing and it should be no different than the ones with XMP?

Overclocking Ram beyond 1600MHz will only grant you more performance if you are using something that can take advantage of it, such as folding.
If i was you i would go with 16GB of Samsung 30NM dimms if you can. they're not expensive like the 2000mhz+ kits(unless you buy them from amazon) but they can do 2400MHz on x79 (their base is 1600mhz)

Well my situation is a bit odd, I already have 4X4GB Patriot G2 1600 1.5V kits from my P55/i7 recently sold.

So my original idea was either

a. keep the 4X4GB for my X79 and buy cheap 6X4GB DDR3 -1600 $15 each AMD ram for the X58 assume lacking XMP does not matter.

or

b. buy 2 more sticks of 4GB Patriot G2 Ram to make up the 6 sticks for X58 and buy something that will be even more cost effective for the X79.

And by the way, I am going with 2 or 3 video cards on the X79.

There's not much to be gained from overclocking RAM, indeed except if you're doing folding or something else that makes good use of it, though applications like that are pretty few. Most apps won't benefit from it. My point being: I wouldn't worry too much about OCing RAM.

I've actually done the same thing. I've just taken my X58 12GB RAM and put them in my current X79 rig, and it worked flawlessly. smile.gif
