Syncing specific files across a home network

Thread Starter
Hi All

I have recently set up a HTPC in the lounge, it uses a wireless dongle to connect to my home network and thus my main rig.

I play NBA 2k12 alot, and sometimes I think I might like to play it on the sofa lol.

But that would involve constantly moving the save game files from one computer to the other so I'm up to date.

Is there a way so that I can set these specific game files to sync with each other constantly over the network? So if I play a few games in a season on my main computer, when I save and exit the game, the save file will sync with the one on my HTPC, so that next time I sit down in the lounge the save is up to date?

Both my main rig and my HTPC run in 1920x1080 so settings and all that should be identical?

Thanks in advance.,

You might try using GameSave Manager - OCN thread.

Myself I would try an NTFS Symbolic Link here. It's a bit advanced for most users however. (And my machines are nearly always on).

You'd need to "share" the game save folder on the 1st computer. On the 2nd computer, you'd need to create the Symbolic Link to that share. The 2nd computer will think it's looking for game files on it's local disk, but will really be getting it's files from the 1st computer.

You'd need to run something like this from an administrator level command prompt on the 2nd computer.
Note: You wont be able to run this actual code below without changing it first (Unless your other computer's name is actually "OtherComputersName"). You could also use the local IP in place of the computer name.
Code:
mklink /d C:\Users\%username%\Documents\My Games\SpecificGamesName \\OtherComputersName\SharedFolderNameFromThatSpecificGame

Some potential problems with this method:
  • You would need to be sure that the "SpecificGamesName" folder in the first half of the command above does not already exist on the 2nd computer or this will fail
  • The first computer (The one you create the "share" on) would need to remain on in order for the second to use the files.
  • It's complicated if you're not familiar with network shares, symbolic links, and the like
  • Also, this command may fail even if you have everything correct simply depending on if you'll require a password to the second computer or not. (Might be remedied by adding the following to the end of the command: ThefirstComputerUsernamesPassword /user:1stComputerName\1stComputerUsername

I've used this many times to "Symlink" a game save folder from one locally installed hard drive to the other (only when a game has problems with saves being somewhere other than C:\)

I must stress this solution is not for everyone, and I'm simply throwing it out there because I can.

Dropbox would be a easy way.
Gives you 2GB and you can get alot more easiy.
It also has selective sync I believe.

How about SyncToy?

I use it at work to sync files between my desktops and laptop. It's fast, easy to set up and use, and it's free.

Just my 2c worth...hope it helps,

Rich
