670: Step Up Worth It?

Thread Starter
Hi everyone - I'm new to this forum so please be kind thumb.gif Been trolling for a good while and just wanted to ask a quick piece of advice.

I built a new rig three weeks ago - i5 Ivy on the new Z77 chipset. At the time all the 600-series cards were essentially out of stock everywhere, so I picked up an EVGA GTX 570 (reference) for $260. I'd intended to step up to the 670 later on, but now am wondering whether it's such a good idea after all.

I've read a lot online about fan issues, artifacting, RSoD, cheap build quality, QC issues, etc. on 670s. Now I know that oftentimes it's the whiners that post these sorts of things while the vast majority of satisfied users are busy enjoying their new piece of hardware. However I can't help but worry that I'll get a card that has an annoying mechanical whirr or artifacts or something and then be stuck in RMA hell. On the other hand, I can always stick an aftermarket cooler on the thing later (surely with so many noise complaints Gelid / Arctic / etc. will get their 670 solutions out soon).

Now my monitor is a T220HD at 1680x1050, and honestly I don't feel as if I need to upgrade my screen. At that resolution I've been very pleasantly surprised by the 570 - it runs everything perfectly well at my capped FPS. I haven't had a chance to try BF3 or Skyrim yet however.

So, do you guys think it's worth stepping up? One additional caveat - money is really not an issue (that's the flip side of not having had a chance to try out BF3 yet wink.gif ). I'm mostly worried about the fans and/or QC on the EVGA 670.

(Note also that I'd have to get the reference 670 with the step-up and that I cannot return my 570 to Newegg - exchange only on the card I got)

The GTX 670 is an awesome card, I wish i'd waited for it to be released instead of buying my 680.
If you're happy with the performance of your card at that resolution then stick with it, there's no point upgrading unless you need more performance. If you were to upgrade to a 1080p or 1200p monitor then it might be worthwhile.

At 1650x1050, I don't think upgrading right now would get a smart move. That 570 should be plenty for what you're doing. It will ROCK BF3 at that resolution!

You could take the extra cash you got and get a bigger monitor, THEN you might start thinking about getting a 670. =P

I hear you guys, and I do understand that a 670 is somewhat overkill at 1050p. That being said, overkill is so so sweet. I've been a long time in the PC wilderness (a circa-2006 Thinkpad T60). Finally got a new job and quite a bit of cash - and I'm quite excited to finally get back to PC gaming.

My rationale is more or less as follows: I can get a 670 step up now for $140. If I wait 1-3 years before upgrading my graphics card, I'll likely get a 670 or 770 for ~ $250-300 then. What will a used 570 be worth then? I feel like it's gotten rather difficult to sell PC components. Likely I'll end up eating the difference and building a PC for my girlfriend. So if I'm going to shell out $250 in a year or two for a 670, why not just spend the $140 now? It's less of an outlay (given the low recovery value on the 570) and I get to use the card for an extra year.

Money is really not a big issue. I'm mainly just concerned with the quality of the 670 vs the 570 - I am totally satisfied with the performance, temps and stability on my 570. And given the huge number of complaints about the 670 build quality (we're talking EVGA reference here), I can't help but be somewhat apprehensive.

You sound like you've already made your mind up, and there's nothing wrong with wanting the best (even if you dont need it). I've only heard good things about the 670, and also seen benchmark scores that beat my 680. mad.gif

Honestly, I would say that you should stick with your 570, unless you think you will be moving up to a higher resolution. I have hardly heard of any issues with 670s that I can recall and EVGA CS is supposed to be some of the best so if you do have an issue I have no doubt that you would get it sorted in a flash.

So, long story short, if you don't plan on changing screens then you should be set for a while; but if you think at any time you might upgrade you could well regret not changing now.

I upgraded from a gtx 260 to a gtx 670. I also play at 1050p but I have another older monitor hooked up to do itunes/spotify/facebook/ ventrilo etc while I play some of my other games. The 670 is complete overkill for my tasks. I run BF3 at no less than 100 fps at all times. However, I bought the 670 because I wanted to future proof my build a little bit. When I graduate from college I plan on building a $2.5-3k system but the best laid plans often go astray! I would recommend doing the step up program, going for the 670 ftw edition(you wont find the problems you are talking about with the design flaws), and start looking at 1080p monitors. They can be had for as little as 150$ for some quality monitors.

Im just playing the waiting game before I buy my monitors because I want to get 2 identical ones.

At 1680 x 1050 your GTX 570 will do fine. Also you will have more options in Jan 2013 with the launch of the GK110 based GTX 780 at USD 550. GK114 based GTX 760 Ti (GTX 680 update) will mostly be around USD 300 and the GTX 760 (GTX 670 update) around USD 250. Also even early next year a GTX 570 will fetch you 125 -150 bucks in the second hand market. it a powerful card. so hold on to your GTX 570 and go for a upgrade in early 2013.

There is no guarantee that GK110 will be released in Jan, it is more likely to be a few months after. All info on the 7XX series is purely speculation, so please don't post it as if it were fact. nVidia had many teething issues with the 6XX series and only recently have they become easily available. These kind of issues are likely to occur with the 7 series as well, especially given the size of the die. Don't offer upgrade advice based on speculation; it won't help anyone. The best we can say is that sometime next year the GK110 will most likely be released and we cannot say anything for sure about price or performance at this point.

But to the OP, if you wait you will always be waiting. I would definitely say to go for the 670 now.

The GTX 670 is an awesome card and nothing really wrong in getting it now as an upgrade. The problems that EVGA had was not with the vanilla card and they took care of their customers very quickly. I would not worry so much about quality and service with EVGA since they have the best customer service in the industry and they even have a rep here in the forum thats always willing to help out.
