gtx 680 bandwidth

Thread Starter
Hi all!

Quick question. It seems the 680 is bandwidth limited at higher resolutions. Will this negatively effect a 4gb model? Will the 4gb still help for higher rez?

Thanks in advance!

What resolution are we talking about here?

If you're going 2560x1600 or running 3 monitors then I would get a 7970 or 7950...

Bandwidth is so much more important as the resolution grows.

Thinking of 3600 x 1920 in the future. But I was wondering what kind of impact the bandwidth might have on the extra vram?

In all seriousness vram isn't an issue until you get into 7680x1440p/1600p resolutions, for 5760x1080p/1200p 2GB models is more than enough. As long as your playing the games as intended and not with some form of added texture mods, this is where vram can get out of control.

In a nutshell, vram is completely blown out of proportion and too many people over forums such as this get to obsessed with it.

Honestly the 2GB model is perfect considering the memory width 256bit In most cases the 4GB models actually run slower due to the lower clocked ram. If your going super high rez you need higher throughput from more memory bandwidth not just more ram. The 384bit bus of the 7970 is the better option, but the 680 2GB handles high resolution extremely well considering the memory handicap. Do some searching and see where the tipping point is for the 680 to start loosing frame rate as the resolution climbs

Thanks for your replies!

I do use hq textures for skyrim, and would most likely do the same for similar games that have them. I know some people over at the nexus have maxed out 3 and 4 gb cards using similar textures at 1600p.

It seems the 680 bandwidth begins to show its limitations at 1200p, and falls behind at 1600p in most titles that it had a lead over the 7970.

I am extremely happy with my 2.5 year old 5850... No issues, 5870 bios out of the box, and still handles bf3 and modded skyrim on ultra at 25+ fps. How idk lol! I did want to go green again due to the plague of driver issues amd is still sorting out.

I do not like the build quality of the reference 670s, less vrms and heat management, poor heatsink and noisy as hell for many people. That said, I am only interested in evga with 4gb, leaving the ftw 4gb, and the classy. Now if those 4gb card are only going to be starved for bandwidth, then its hard to rationalize the cost. They would look too damn good in my case though lol!

Maybe I will wait for a classy review and see how it reacts to higher resolutions.
