How to get audio out of my headphones and speakers at the same time?

Thread Starter
I have a SB X-Fi Titanium, and a Z68 extreme3 Gen3. I have my HPA-2's plugged into the sound card, and I am trying to plug some regular desktop speakers into the on board audio, so I can use those if I don't want to put on my headset for a quick Youtube video or something. Whenever I have the speakers plugged into the on board jacks, it "mutes" my headset. I can "test" them using the windows audio manager, and sound still comes out...it just won't play 2 simultaneous streams of audio. I tried setting the correct option in the advanced audio settings in the realtek drivers, but it will still only play audio through the speakers, plugged into the MB.

Any ideas how I can make both audio devices on the 2 different sound cards (on board, and the X-Fi) play at the same time?

you could run an audio splitter off of the sound card and then use that for both, have the headphones on a cheap amp, then turn the volume to an adequate level when not using them, thats what im doing atm

Why not just change the output on whatever it is you're trying to use?

For example let's say you're trying to watch some porn on a media player on your phones while you blast music as a guise on the speakers, all you so is make the player output using the headphone jack or on board output while keeping the main speaker output as default. This would solve most issues but can be tedious.

Can't select the output on firefox or BF3, or else this would work.

I also don't want to spend any money on getting this working, so no amp/splitter either. There has got to be a way to do it on the software side, I just don't know how.

Cheap splitter http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10429&cs_id=1042901&p_id=7204&seq=1&format=2

I use one with my htpc for when my buddy comes over and wants to play D3 he hooks up both the headset and speakers then will unplug the speakers in case I knock out first.

Like I said, I'm not looking to spend ANY money on this. Also, a simple splitter wouldn't work. The HPA2's use 5.1, with a separate audio jack for the sub, center, front, and rear drivers in the headphones. I would have to reconfigure my sound card to stereo every single time I wanted to use the speakers vs the headphones. It would be easier to get up from my desk, walk around the back of my computer, and unplug the speakers whenever I wanted to use my headset (or vise versa).

you can't play the same audio source to a two different outputs simultaneously, it's a windows limitation.

Well, if true, that is disappointing.

EDIT: Did a bit more research, and it appears Ghostrider is exactly right. That sucks.

It is. That isn't an issue once you get a sound card that you actually allows you to output to speakers or headphones (e.g. the Asus Xonar line).

even if you get a sound card, the limitation is still there, an audio source can only play to one output, can't do multiple outputs.
