Is it enough to run Windows XP?

Thread Starter
Okay I've got a build to watch movies, a build to play games. A relative of mine dropped their PC from 1999 at my place, so I thought of sucking its life out by doing some 24/7 downloading.

Specs are :
Pentium MMX 166Mhz
32Mb RAM
2Gb HDD
SIS VGA Card

So will this run windows XP fast enough to see enough downloading speed?
Its currently running Windows 98 fine enough.

Or is this idea not worth it and I'm better off dumping it?

There are USB ports luckily so I can use pendrives to transfer downloaded content onto my PC. biggrin.gif

If you're talking about downloading and seeding linux distros, Ubuntu has a torrent client built into it...

Run it, I don't even think it would walk it.

Minimum spec for XP is a 233MHz CPU with 300MHz recommended. All your other components met the requirements.

I would think you would at least want 512mb of RAM for the system.

Yeah, I have run XP on less actually, but it isn't worth it. It will be so painfully slow you probably couldn't even load most programs without it crashing. Stick with 98 and find a downloading client that will work with it or use Linux. I'd push for linux myself, if downloading is all you will be doing with it. Certain distro's will handle minimal hardware much much better than windows.

So why bring it up?

Torrenting and Piracy are not the same thing..

Torrenting discussions are fine so long as it is not regarding the distribution of copyrighted material. If you feel a post violates the ToS then please report the post and leave the moderation to the staff smile.gif
