Is it enough to run Windows XP? - Page 3

you would have a hard time finding a linux distro with a gui that will run on that.
even tinycore will not run on anything under 48mb of ram. they have microcore but i think thats all command line.

that box is good for one thing, scrap yard.

think of it like this, the amount of power (watts) that thing draws just to do its basic functions far out weigh the amount of money spent in electricity to run it.

Did i read that right? 32mbs of ram?!?! The only modern distro i can think of that might be fine for that system with a gui might be something with a microkernal, such as arch hurd or minix. He only gui that i think it could run might be openbox/otherwm plus a couple of add ons

Yeah, i wonder why... Jkjk. Any way the machien is good for software about 10+ years old or else a system with no gui. If you have any unix expearince, might bot be a bad option... As in my last post, a very light gui might be possable but youd be pushing it. I meen, 32mbs... Is well, almost nothing. Arch hurd or gentoo hurd would be my chioce if your serios about getting the machien running with a current gen os

i could care less if that was your intent. but that system has less power than my router.
if 98se works ok then just keep it. not even sure if xp would boot on there.

there is an application that will strip xp and 2000 down to almost nothing meaning that you MIGHT be able to run xp on that computer
http://www.litepc.com/xplite.html

if nothing else you could do a fresh install of 98se and then use their
http://www.litepc.com/98lite.html

either of these options will help performance of that pc if used correctly.
less ram usage, faster boot time, less cpu usage.

I'm going ahead with Windows 98SE, got my dad's lying around, and the other apps which were recommended a few posts before.

I'll need more than just 2 USB ports, so I have to shop for either a HUB or another port(s).

I'd say throw it away, it not worth the headache. I still have my uncles old PC from 99, Pentium mmx 200, 32MB edo ram 4GB Hdd, 2MB VGA. At first I tried to use it with windows 98 but the VGA was soon weak it couldn't run videos properly. Then you got 32mb ram which will make everything to crawl or HDD for that matter.

Worst thing though is reliability, you simply cannot predict when it will die. So I stop trying to make it work.

Goodluck with that machine, IMHO its not worth the effort.
