2500k vs 8150 after price drops?

Thread Starter
I've been trying to find an answer all day and I can't seem to find any recent threads. To my understanding the 8150 and 2500k trade blows, the 8150 having a bit of an advantage by having 8 threads in some situations. But I'm also under the impression that a 8150 would probably be more future proof.

The thing is that now the 8150 can be had for around 206$CAD, the lowest price in Canada right now seems to be around 214$. (according to some pricebat.ca searches)

I'm no intel fanboi, if you take a look at my sig rig you should be able to figure that out. My reason for asking this is simply because I figure it would be a good recommendation for someone who recently asked me for a 1000$ budget build. With a mechanical keyboard, SSD and a decent 200$ range GPU it might get tight.

But really I'm just interested in trying out how AMD stacks up, for 206$ it doesn't seem to be that bad of a deal. But then again maybe it would be simpler just to stick with the tried and true 2500k.

I would buy a 8120, it can be found for 30 less, and since both are unlocked you lose 0% performance. Also, a 8150@stock on most benchmarks is 17% slower than a i7, now if you overclock it (4.5 Ghz on air is easily done in most common cases) you should be able to have i7 performance for 170 usually!

I can't say BD is futureproof, regardless if money is tight grab 8120 instead.

Good news: AMD is rumored to be using Steamroller on the PS4; all the eighth-gen consoles are multithreaded. This may make it more attractive for manufacturers (EDIT: developers, my bad) to make PC games more multithreaded as well, and if game developers get used to coding things for the PS4, they'll (in theory) have a pretty good idea as to how to optimize things for AMD-based PC systems. If this does turn out to be true, Bulldozer likely will age pretty well, though Steamroller's a new arch from the ground up and may operate substantially differently than BD.

Bad news: Bulldozer doesn't support FMA3, and once Intel brings out Haswell, they'll likely be pushing hard for its implementation. This may make it less futureproof in terms of future applications that do support FMA3. However, considering the majority of applications these days aren't multithreaded yet and the tech's been around for ages, implementation may still be a slow process even if Intel pushes. Piledriver has FMA3 as a contingency in case it does take off.

Eh... no.

PS3 uses a 7-core processor, which one of them does the work, six of them run six separate programs (no parallelism found in multi-thread), and the remaining one runs the OS. Gaming is very limited in terms of parallelism. That is why you see very few multi-thread games out there, it just lacks the potential. It is very unlikely that Sony will slap a x86 processor, never mind yet to be released Streamroller, into a game console. Game consoles use an already exist and proven components, not the latest "cutting edge one". For example, upcoming Wii U uses modified GPU from Radeon HD47xx era.

As for FMA, Piledriver will drop FMA4 and use FMA3 instead. It is funny since it is AMD who at the last minute switched from FMA3 to FMA4 for Bulldozer.

Radeon 47xx doesn't sound right unless it's really been modded or OC'd into the stratosphere. WiiU is capable of pushing 1080p, and my 4850 had difficulties pushing things above 1680x1050. Even if this does turn out to be true, Nintendo tends to to err on the conservative side in regards to hardware. Sony is a different story.

The PS3 was the first major commercial implementation of Cell, and Sony generally plays a "long game" in terms of console life cycle, so it wouldn't be out of character for them to try and use upscale components once more. Steamroller is just a rumor as I've said, but it wouldn't make sense for them to put in super-old tech going by their past history.

PS3 uses a modified GeForce 7 series (I believe around 7300) as its GPU. Because console is so much more efficient at gaming, it makes little sense to put powerful hardware on it. One of the reason why PS3 has poor sale is because its hardware is too powerful, causing game development cost to be quite high.

2500k is way better.

Bulldozer will be faster in some random apps that take advantage of 8 cores but the 2500k will be much faster in gaming and pretty much every other general task out there.

Really though it's not even close especially if you are a gamer. AMD doesn't have a single processor out that can handle a high end set up. The dude who quoted you 17% up there is talking with all benchmarks combined and the only reason it's that close is because of the multi-threaded stuff. In your average 1-4 core app the IPS difference is more like 50+-%. Some multi-threaded stuff the 2500k will even win. Like I said really not close. Especially if you live near a microcenter and you can get one for 150 bucks.

You are right about the consoles it would take too much money and the size of the units would be way bigger then they are now and the cooling would have to change big time along with the power supply source..I say the 2500k is still the king when it comes to doing a gaming rig no matter what side of the fence you are on.thumb.gif
