Help: Crazy Build for Work $15000k

UPDATE 07.03.12 @9:43AM

Guys, I ran the AMD build with the guys here at work and we found out that our company has to pay for a license per core. I was told to limit the build to 8 cores. The 64 AMD one would basically require all the licenses our company has for the software we use. It was stressed to have as much of the fastest RAM as possible with an 8 core CPU. Thanks for the help guys. Here is an updated build if you guys can take a look.

Looking to use the SSD as primary boot and the 3TB Seagates in RAID 1. Any issues with this configuration?

Thank you guys for the help!

Please see the SECOND SHEET "Intel2"
Build0.xlsx 23k .xlsx file

What's up guys, it's been a while on here but I figured I wouldn't have to consult with anyone else except people here...my work [we deal with communications and satellite engineering] is looking to get a new computer to run two programs... ANSYS HFSS and STARS http://www.cmgroup.com/software/stars.htm. I've been told that the programs are not GPU intensive but are CPU and RAM speed dependent for the most matter. The company wants to go through Dell [where we go to get all our computer hardware] and we currently use T7500 Workstations. A typical RAM usage session is around 20GB RAM, but this will increase as our company develops the design more.

I'm looking at the Dell Precision line... Single/Dual Xeons Processors [Intel Xeon E5-2687W], 128GB RAM, 2x 3TB RAID 1 HDD, 1 boot SSD, 1 SSD for programs [atleast 256GB], and graphics card does not matter.

We are looking at a budget of around ballpark of $15k...we can spend more/less.

1). Can you guys make recommendations to the hardware you would recommend? We are looking for fast memory with multi core CPU(s). I could say more cores is more important than clock speed.

2). I have been told that the GT/s on the CPU is directly related to the Memory speed of RAM....where the Dell website says,

"Maximum memory speed is tied to processor. 1600MHz memory will run at a reduced speed of 1333MHz when paired with 7.2GT/s processors and 1066MHz with 6.4GT/s processors. 1333MHz memory will run at a reduced speed of 1066MHz when paired with 6.4GT/s processors."

Can someone clearly explain how this works? Does this have to do with QPI? I'm still used to FSB equating to RAM speed and CPU clock depending on multi x FSB...

3). We can custom build the computer...but this is for the company and troubleshooting will have to be done through the IT dept...so this method is more headaches...

Here is a build below:

how fast does the RAM have to be? if u want 3000 (or over 2133) Mhz RAM u can't go with anything other than ivy bridge (somebody correct me if im wrong).

You can look up the Xeon board dual Xeon CPU. http://www.asus.com/Server_Workstation/Workstation_Motherboards/Z9PED8_WS/#overview Check the tabs for your selections. Basically build one custom workhorse pc.

I will look into that link....I'm not sure but we want 1600Mhz at the least. I just got news from my task lead that I can build a custom computer. He said CPU and RAM hungry...so those components are the focus...

We are trying to do a boot SSD, regular programs SSD, and a 2x 3TB RAID 1 array. Would this be optimal on the stock motherboard controller?

Thanks,

Folding rigs should give you a good idea. Have a look at this:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1212613/guide-building-a-2p-4p-from-start-to-finish-along-with-ppd-benchmarks-gallery

Might not be the most specialised for you, but should be a good starting point. Just add a gpu to something similar. No expert, but if I was going to do something like this I would take inspiration from the folders and serious BOINC crunchers as CPU/Ram is all they want.

That guide it also fairly old.

I'd say go with a custom built 4p setup.

Supermicro H8QG6-F Motherboard$999.99
4x AMD Opteron 6276 Interlagos 2.3GHz 16MB L3 Cache Socket G34 115W 16-Core Server Processor ($899.99each)
4x Wintec 48GB (6 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Server Memory (thats 4 sets)($469.99 per set)
SeaSonic X-SERIES X-1050 1050W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply$199.99

That will get you started up there. All you have to do is choose a case. I have seen some of the guys here on OCN put these into CaseLabs cases. Which you will spend a chunk on. But the build quality is superior. I'm not saying that Dell has bad servers. But you will get better performance out of something like above IMO.

Get a few Crucial M4 CT256M4SSD2 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) for your boot and Programs drives. Then 3x Western Digital VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ 1TB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive for your RAID.

The build above will run cooler than a normal server.

The build Erick Silver posted has 64 cores. For a high end multi core application that's gonna blitz just about everything. I had a look at that software, and it looks like the more cores the better the performance. It also has 192GB of 1600MHZ RAM.

16 cores for that intel vs 64 for that AMD build...
