Pick a GPU for Triple Monitors - Page 2

Keep in mind that putting 2 or more monitors on a card will run the clocks high even with no load - resulting in louder cards. Perhaps a tri-sli/ or single watercooled 670 is the best solution if you want silence.

I agree with the majority opinion here. I am running two 6950s like what was suggested, but if I were buying right now with that budget I would definitely go for a single card solution with either a 7970, 670, or 680.

I don't know what your game of preference is, but keep these things in mind, as I am running 5760x1080 on crossfired 7970s (stock speeds currently):

1. You will not max out all games at max settings with crossfired 7970s, let alone a single card. I play BF3 at the high preset and stay above 60FPS usually. To the individual that said crossfired 6950s would be plenty, this is not true. You would be able to play high end games with that setup on 3 monitors, but the settings would likely be cranked down to medium on games like BF3, Crysis, Metro, etc. Some may even require low.

2. As another poster said, the resolution that is being driven just sitting at the desktop makes the cards work a lot harder, and in return, raising idle and load temps, making the fans work harder and be louder. If this is going to be a problem, I would look into water cooling.

That ''smoothness myth'' is not true anymore. With the latest 12.6 drivers, screen tearing is gone, and it's now smooooth like butter in Eyefinity.

12.6 drivers are a MAJOR release for AMD owners. Big improvement all across the board for Eyefinity with multi-GPUs owners. So those talking about their past experiences with the 6xxx serie, or with pre-12.6 drivers, are not giving accurate info anymore. Useless.

Just for fun I took some picture this morning of some games I'm playing on my set-up: 4X7970 Quad-Fire with 3X30'' at 7680X1600. Max settings max AA on everything. Smoooooth like butter with 12.6 beta drivers. smile.gif

And you don't need 4Gb for 3X 24''. Believe me. 3Gb is enough for my set-up. So more then enough for 3X24''. smile.gif

Wow! Great info. I just downloaded 12.6 and tested this and indeed there is no more screen tearing! Awesome. +rep for great info.

Also, I have two 6950s and I don't have to run Bf3 at medium or low settings...everything is maxed except for AA. Not sure why people think that, too.

Thread Starter
I believe I am going to go with the 4gb EVGA GTX 670.

Question though, I plan on using the 2 DVI ports and then the Display Port as my monitors (Dell u2312hm) have on board displayport. Is this a good option, since they dont have HDMI? I dont believe I need any adapter, just straight Displayport cable from the card to the monitor, but I would like to know before I make the purchase tonight.

Thanks for the help everyone!

The backplate connectors consist of two dual link DVI outputs, one full sized HDMI 1.4 output and a single DisplayPort. As with the GTX 680, it is compatible with NVIDIA Surround and has the capability to output a fourth signal to an accessory display.

Here is a fabulous deal on XFX HD 7950 DD .

XFX HD 7950 DD - USD 360 with 10% off w/ promo code HARDOCPX613C, ends 6/19 and USD 20 mail in rebate

Nett price = USD 360 - 36 - 20 = 304. can't get any better than this . Maybe they are clearing stock for Tahiti 2 launch at the end of this month.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150588

this card can do 950 Mhz - 1 Ghz at stock volts. with voltage tweaking you can get 1100 - 1150 Mhz. clock for clock HD 7950 is close to HD 7970 perf. HD 7950 OC competes well with GTX 670 OC. Effectively you get similar performance for USD 100 lesser.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/03/01/xfx_radeon_hd_7950_black_edition_video_card_review/8

This card has a dual link DVI , a HDMI and 2 mini DP ports. comes with a HDMI - DVI adapter. You can connect one of your DVI monitors to the DVI port . One to the HDMI port using DVI adapter. All you need is a miniDP - DVI adapter. Get one which is certified by AMD
