Water Cooling Case for GTX 480, RAD size?

Thread Starter
Hello Overclockers. I have a question about cases fitting Radiators and watercooling my GPU and CPU.

1) Thinking of getting XSPC Watercool Kit. I want to water cool my GTX 480, and an incoming i5 2400k. I do plan on overclocking.
Is a RX240 enough cooling for both, or should I spend a bit more for the RX360? I have absolutely no interest in SLIing a second card, so you don't have to "consider the future."

2) IF I NEED the RX360, is there a MID size case that will easily fit it? My preference is to the HAF series, and I was looking at the HAF 912 and HAF XM, but I can't tell if it or any of the MID size HAF cases will fit the RX360 comfortably internally. I don't have any intention of having any RAD sitting on the exterior, as there are periodically some young children that visit my household and they like to grab everything. If i'm forced to get the full sizes, i'll probably get the HAF 932 or the Storm Trooper. HAF X seems like overkill since I don't plan on SLI.

Please keep in mind that since it's the XSPC Watercool Kit, it will use the dual bay Reservoir/Pump, and I would like to to have my DvD drive in there, so it also has to comfortably seat those as well.

Thanks a lot. I've made a lot of informed choices in the past by reading these forums, first time poster.

The RX240 won't be enough for both the 480 and a cpu, let alone overclocking. The 400 series cards run pretty hot when overclocked, I have two 470s and they punch out a lot of heat @ 800/1600/1800. Even though you're not planning to SLI, that's still a lot of heat to think about based on the architecture.

I'd say relying on a single RX360 should be enough, although with overclocking and underload the fans might sound like a jet engine, and you will probably have pretty high temps.

It can't be higher than the temps I was getting on my current set up.

I was getting 100+ with 100% Fan power with 3 fans and a pci slot fan with light gaming. The PCI slot it was in is no longer reads anything plugged into it. I had to send it in for RMA, and they are sending me a new one.

So your saying that even if I water cool it with that set up, i'll still have high temps? What if I skip overclocking the 480 and just the CPU? If so, got any case recommendations?

Looks like for sure i'll be getting the RX360. Any Mid sizes that will fit it? Preferably CM/ HAF series?

100 for the gpu? cpu? both? either is pretty bad. What size motherboard are you going to use in this case?

Water cooling to me isn't so much about getting way better overclocking capability, since you can often achieve the same stable overclock on air. It is more about doing so with less noise.

Why not just get a RX/EX 240 along with a RX/EX120? Btw, I'm only using a rad similar to a RX360 for my 2550K and 2 5870s, so a RX240 may work, but with slightly higher temps.

My GPUs max out at around 40C during full usage in games like BF3 and my CPU maxes out at around 60-70C.

I plan on getting that whole RX360 Kit from XSPC whenever it ever shows up in stock again.

Again, I don't know if a Mid size case will be able to house the RX 360, much less 2x Rads of varying size. Still thinking about the HAF cases...

I plan on getting this as my mobo:

Standard ATX

Yeah, in the end I'm not worried about overclocking much. I just know the 480 was built in Hell, and has brought temperatures of that kind with it. I just figure that BECAUSE i'm water cooling, I can get a bit more jolt out of it. But if I find that it's not worth having that Jolt if it creates more noise than i'd like, then i'll just bring it down.

You are right, in the end i just want a quieter system. The reason i'm hell bent on using the 480 is because I got it for $180 a couple weeks ago at Fry's. It was an open box, but I was able to register it and get it RMA'd, so i'm getting a brand new one returned to me. $180 for a 480 seems pretty nice I think. It's the ASUS ENGTX 480 to be exact.

I also have the EK FC480 GTX waterblock coming in.

Now that I think about it... if you want to stick to a mid tower case it may be best to get a 140mm radiator instead. I can't really think of a lot of decent cases that support triple 120mm radiators... but I can think of a lot of them that support two dual 140mm radiators.

I theory a dual 140mm radiator will be pretty close performance wise to a triple 120mm radiator as they are pretty close in surface area.

triple 120mm radiator (360): 120*360 = 43,200
dual 140mm radiator (280): 140*280 = 39,200
dual 120mm radiator (240): 120*240= 28,800

I was talking about the D5 kits (same pump as the Swiftech MCP-655) seen here. Their pumps are strong enough to handle 2-3 GPUs along with the CPU and you can choose between EX (thin as the RS rads and almost as efficient as the RX at lower speeds) or the RX. I was suggesting you get any of the 240 kits and just buy a EX or RX120 where there is space elsewhere, at least this way you are able to choose from more midtower cases.
