Overclock i5 3750 stress test temps?

Thread Starter
I'm fairly new to overclocking manually. I have used software, and now I'm overclocking in BIOS...anyway

My question is this, what is safe temps with ivy bridge running prime 95 and monitoring with real-temp? Right now I'm at 4.3ghz, ( stock voltage) temps are

58 58 62 62 59.

I would like to push overclock more, but I heard I'm safe with ivy bridge with max load temps under 90c, to me that seems to hot, but then again everything i have read says ivy bridge runs hotter/safer.

Info in system

Gigabyte z77
i5 3750
Kuhler 620
8gb ram
evga 680gtx (overclocked)
5 total fans- push pull

Also like to add I have read over the overclock guides I they all seem to throw out slightly different "safe" temps.

Thanks

Stay under 90c and you will be fine.

if you wanna stay on the slightly safer side..try not to pass 80C in Prime95 and 85C in IBT (this was my limit). But yeah...don't pass 90C at full load stress testing.

Your temps looks great...you should be able to hit 4.5ghz.

I'm just an overcautious noob i suppose. Most threads, or guides said under 90, but several forbid over 60c

Thanks!

I agree, under 90c is just fine from what I have seen of Ivy. The reason you see a lot of different safe temps is that there is no official "safe" temperature. We're essentially all just making the best prediction we can based on the data we've got and that data says that 90c or around there should be pretty safe. That said, a lot of overclocking guides' writers will be playing it safe with their recommendations since they don't want to be held responsible for any damage that could occur as unlikely as it may be.

Thanks!

60C at full load stress testing doesn't make much sense...because that limit wouldn't even grant you the ability to overclock. I'm pretty sure your CPU would hit 60C on stock speed under Prime95/IBT. So don't listen to that.

I'm at:

30C idle
60C in-game Guild Wars 2 (max temp)
80C Prime95 (12 hours, 93% RAM)
85C (IBT, max stress)

it's totally safe...no issues what so ever.

My Advice: Just try to get the highest overclock you can, (1) staying under 1.5v, (2) under 85C on full stress testing, (3) while remaining completely stable (pass 12 hours of Prime95 & 50 rounds of IBT on high RAM usage with no errors)..you'll be fine.

Also, I just noticed that bit about forbidding over 60c. You must have been reading AMD guides. Please make sure you are ready guides for Intel chips since the thermal characteristics of the two chips are entirely different. With AMD you really don't want to pass 60, but Intel chips always run at higher temperatures because of the way they are made. It's nothing to worry about.

thanks everyone,

I'm gonna push her to 4.4 and test. I would like to see how far i can go without changing voltage....not to comfortable with that yet.

I would hope to get up to 4.5 no voltage change

If you're not comfortable changing voltage then make sure you have it set to a certain voltage in BIOS and not "Auto" because Auto will add voltage for you and often far too much! redface.gif

What should I set it at, or where should I look to read up on setting the voltage?
