Soon to Purchase My First Intel CPU; Have A Few ( Or a lot) of Questions

Thread Starter
I will soon be upgrading my aging Athlon II X4. It has served a good three years, but it just cannot keep up with my gaming and 3D rendering work. I am considering either an i5 2500K or an i5 3570K. I have several questions though:

1) My current cooler is an Arctic Cooling Freezer 13. It seems decent, but I am concerned about its cooling performance when facing on overclocked i5 2500K or i5 3570K. Any idea if it can effectively cool the said CPUs?

2) I will most likely upgrade my HD 6750 later on in the future. For those who upgraded to the listed CPUs while keeping their GPU, what were you performance gains like in any system intensive game?

I hope someone can provide their insight to help with my questions.

that cooler will work fine for the 2nd and 3rd gen i5 processors, maybe not any insane overclocking, but just keep the max temps below 60c or so and it will be good.

just make sure you have the right mounting bracket. when i had an amd processor, the heatsink had a clip that just had to stretch down to a plastic clip on the mobo. when i got my new i7 rig, it uses a bracket that has screws that attach to a backplate that has to be installed on the mobo.

The cooler has the proper mount for the LGA 1155 socket.

Just remeber ivy is notorious for heat so if you are set on sticking with that cooler you might not want to go that route. Clock for clock there is about a 10% performance increase between ivy and the sb counterpart so it all depends on your prefrence.

I think the heat ends up being much higher when compared to the ratio of performance though.

That's what I am concerned about, but doesn't it only got really hot after a certain voltage and clock? I was hoping a 4.0Ghz clock would be fine in terms of heat produced.

If you're serious about video encoding, you need to get an i7-3770k (or i7-2600k if for some bizarre reason there is no ability to get an i7-3770k). The extra threads will make a big difference.

The cooler will most likely be fine. Ivy Bridge's heat problems are a combination of poor heat transfer and the small architecture creating localized hot spots rather than total heat output. So the transfer rate from the IHS to the heatsink itself is more important than the total heat dissipation. Long story short, your current cooler should be fine as long as you 1) have a mounting bracket that fits 1155 and 2) aren't going for an aggressive overclock (you are not).

As far as game performance, it's always different depending on the game. If you play SC2, the performance will be like night and day. You'll be amazed at the improvement in late game performance (especially team games). If you're talking about single-player BF3, you might not notice any difference at all. For most games, your performance increase will likely be quite moderate, actually. Most games are more GPU-dependent. Another possible exception: single player strategy games (Total War series, Civ-type games). The better CPU may reduce the time taken to calculate AI moves for turn-based strategy.

I would go with the 2500k personally, Ivy is not that much faster and it runs ways hotter, 2500k have also come down a lot in price smile.gif

Thanks for the input. I may be able to go for the I7, but I will most likely have to spend a total of 2 hours to and from a Microcenter to fit it in my budget ($400). My main priority is gaming, so I though going for an I5 over an I7 shouldn't affect performance too much in certain tasks.

At this point I think the best CPU for a budget screamer is the 2600K. They are getting cheap on-sale, and have Hyperthreading which you will benefit from likely with rendering. That cooler should handle a 2600K, it looks sort of like a Hyper 212, but watch the temps.
