Google take the photos when the sun is directly above to reduce shadows, Apple on the other hand...

That is just pure fail!

I guess someone better get to driving?
Look forward to seeing what Apple has and how it refines it.
Also, I actually do use street view a good bit from Google, guess I just suck at gaining landmarks for directions from a sat view.
Agreed. I wonder how Apple has gone about setting up their maps--is it entirely independently conducted (apple cars driving around similarly to google), or are they collaborating with other map-generating services?

Well, regardless, give it some time.

I personally think google has it pretty much down, and unless Apple can deliver the same thing, it'll be a tough sell for their customers (potentially) without allowing the use of google maps for some time.

One thing I'm curious about is fly-over vs. google's recent work on openGL maps (beta for the desktop), essentially rendering a 3D-like image of maps (what they call "45-degree" view), but who knows how realistic that is to implement on mobile devices (it is pretty neat, but almost has a "look at what we can do" feel at the moment).

Apple should have worked on this for much longer before making it a mandatory apple upgrade and removing google maps.

Hardly... it's still a few months before iOS 6 is released but Apple's Maps are looking pretty great so far. Gizmodo's comparison is quite... undetailed. Hopefully someone will do a nice thorough comparison but I'm not sure that'll happen before iOS 6 is released.

I wanna see these guys fight in the street once Apple gets a fleet of cars out there. I can see it now, passing each other on other sides of the road on 7th street and Google throws a slurpy onto Apple's windshield. Apple retaliates later making the Google car completely white, covering it with Apple stickers. Oh the fun I would have if I were a Google driver, I'll find you Apple cars!!

Google doesn't take aerial photos and neither does Apple (Streetview is mostly a Google project but by far not the only ones doing it). The imagery you see in online maps come from a variety of sources and not just Google. The difference you are seeing is likely due to zoom level, timestamp, or who has bothered to pay from the newest.

The only difference I see between the two maps in the OP is the information level at different zoom levels. Cartographically speaking the Apple looks better. I can almost guarantee they contain the same information and more likely than not Apple is using the same databases for their maps. There are very few sources of geographic information that cover the US and even fewer for rest of the world.

The apple shot has shadows, the google one doesn't.... its plain and simple to see...

Google's looks like a real map.
Apple's like a flyer showing directions.

For anyone who wants to see a bit more about the 3D view in Apple's Maps you can check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgLDkHJduRg

Do Apple use OpenStreetMaps or whatever it's called? Or do they have their very own thing?
