[Gizmodo] Google Maps vs. Apple Maps: A Side-By-Side Comparison - Page 6

Apple stated their main reason was to "monetise" their users. There was nothing wrong with GoogleMaps to be quite honest!

Wouldn't google be a bit upset they were taken for a ride? They offered Apple their maps for so many generations.......

Thankfully Google said they will release their map app for the iPhone. Considering other things like Gmail are not blocked, I wouldn't think this would be.

Just kidding, Is still early atm we can't really judge and compare with google until Apple map app matureized

Trivia time! In the maps world, companies usually add small, made up roads as a means of copyright protection. If company X is suspicious that company Y copied their work, they check Y's map for the fake road that X added. If it's there, it would indicate that rather then license a map created by another third party, or make their own, they copied the work from company X, and then it's lawsuit time. Stuff like roads can't be copyrighted, but a map of them can. This "noise" helps prevent blatant copying of work.

I know that Apple licensed Tom Tom for the turn by turn navigation, and I imagine that the maps were licensed from Navteq or another 3rd party map maker.

I'm pretty sure on Modern Marvels it was stated that the way paper maps are folded were patented as well.

At least iOS user wont be held back by Apples refusal to pay Google for certain features anymore. Other than having to hop between two apps for streetview, anyways.

I guess someone better get to driving?
Look forward to seeing what Apple has and how it refines it.
Also, I actually do use street view a good bit from Google, guess I just suck at gaining landmarks for directions from a sat view.

i kinda just expected them to copy googles info and release it as there own. not be a smartas but serious.

I'll have to say that 3D view would be kinda nice, no more real need or usefulness of google streetview.

With Apple combining with TomTom for this endeavor I will say once full up it looks promising. Interesting to say the least.

Currently the iOS device navigation sucks, and I'm sure that's why apple is doing this, google wouldn't let them have turn by turn without some huge fee I'm sure..

I for one as an iPhone owner am really liking the looks of this..

And no I'm not a fanboy, I think apples doing some really stupid stuff but I do like there phone and am looking forward to real
