Is my build ok?

Hi, I find that a lot of people have something against the parts in my build. The OCZ PSU people say lasts about 1 year, but my dad has had one for 3+ years and going strong. I feel like I could have got something better quality for the money. Anyway, what is your opinion?

Case: Thermaltake V3 Black Edition - $40
CPU: Phenom II X4 965 - $100
Mobo: ASRock 970 Extreme3 - $50
Ram: Crucial Ballistix 8GB 1333 Kit - $35 (Corsair XM3 4GB 1333 I got was bad)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB - $75
CD: ASUS 24x - $35
OS: MIcrosoft Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit - $150
PSU: OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w - $70

$555

I already had the 9400GT, plan to get a 7850 in a few months.

I plan to rebuild in maybe 4 years or so, or whenever I run into cash.

You might want to look at this seasonic psu. Not that there is anything necessarily wrong with OCZ, but for 10 bucks cheaper I would definitely go with seasonic.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151093

It is currently priced at 59.99 from 99.99.

Other than that it looks like a nice budget build.

Get home premium 64-bit instead of windows professional. Get you to your 7850 sooner. There's really only an esoteric feature or two to differentiate them.

You'd probably want to pay a few extra bucks for 1600mhz RAM. If you're comfortable with RAM overclocking, the Samsung kit everyone loves.

I'm not totally up on AMD stuff recently, but I thought higher speed RAM was helpful there (more so than Intel anyway).

I second what icehotshot said about the PSU, although with shipping there's no savings for getting that Seasonic. According to Phaedrus' power supply calculator (check PSU forum), you only need 450w for a heavily overclocked Phenom II x4 & 7850.

The only great deal in that range is the Antec Neo Eco 450c @ us.ncix.com for $35, or maybe the XFX pro series 450w @ newegg if you don't mind dealing with rebate.

If you want to stick in the massive overkill wattage range, us.ncix.com has the Antec High Current Gamer 620 @ the same $70 price (no shipping) you've been looking at or the XFX Core 650w for $65 after rebate. both of those should be roughly equal in quality to the Seasonic but higher in wattage (suitable for crossfire), and slightly above the OCZ in quality.

Personally, I'd probably get the XFX pro series 450w unless planning future crossfire, in which case I'd probably get the XFX Core 650w. But then, I don't mind waiting for rebates.

The rig itself will do you just fine. I'm sure you plan on overclocking that 965 to the 4 GHz range, at which point it won't be a bottleneck for any GPU you want to run. I will go ahead warn you, though, before the Intel fanboys show up: that CPU won't be as fast as an Intel one. You'll take a serious performance hit going with AMD. Your web browser or office application will be several milliseconds slower. biggrin.gif

I do agree with the Seasonic and Windows 7 Home Premium suggestions, though. There's nothing wrong with the OCZ PSU, but the Seasonic might be a little better, and for most people, Win 7 HP is just as good as Pro.

Good luck with the build. It will last you a while. And you can always drop in a Piledriver in a year or two if need be.

Thanks. I may get Piledriver but here's the thing: People say that in single threaded applications, Bulldozer is around 15% slower than Phenom II. Piledriver is supposed to be around 15% better in single threaded applications than Bulldozer. Isn't it just a renamed Phenom II with more cores then?

Possibly.  But it could also be expected to overclock further - in the ~4.8Ghz+ range as opposed to ~4 with Phenom II.

The IPC is roughly the same, but the Piledriver will reach much higher clockspeeds than any Phenom II will. As the fabs improve their production techniques, there's no reason to think that speeds of well over 5 GHz won't be reached. Piledriver will perform the same on a clock-for-clock basis, but draw less power and clock much higher than Phenom II.
