[The Verge] Vizio reboots the PC - Page 9

They are a United States based rebrand vendor. They officially sell the most tv's in the united states. That being said they work with china, Korea, and Taipei manufactures to produce Vizio branded product lines. They started out selling just in Walmart stores exclusively. But so many customers were walking into Target, Best Buys asking to see their Vizio tv's that they even started to distribute to other vendors. They are almost single handed responsible for the price drops of medium sized LCD tv (40" to 47") to the $500 price range.

I own a Vizio TV. I've liked it so far. I bought my 37" 720p TV about 4 years ago for $599+tax

I worked at Walmart for a few years, and I always tried to steer customers clear of Vizio TVs as they were the #1 most returned-defective out of all the brands Walmart had. Customers would invariably describe how they were perfectly happy with the picture and build quality only to have a sudden failure a few weeks or months later. It got to be so bad it was almost comical...the chicks at the customer service desk would call me in the Electronics department and say "Hey Malcolm, come check out this TV for us, customer is returning it and says it stopped working after a month." I'd ask "Is it a Vizio?" and I was right about 90% of the time. laugher.gif

Good for them if they've gotten it together since then.

If Wal-Mart is selling mostly Vizio units than I would expect this. This doesn't mean that Vizio is bad.

I actually have a LG monitor, although it's good, I'd rather get Samsung.

It wasn't really "mostly" Vizio, though. Sure, we sold quite a few of them, but TVs of all brands 42" and under tended to move pretty quickly (if it falls below a certain price, Walmart customers will buy it regardless of the brand.) On a Saturday I would typically cart out 10+ TVs a day, Vizio, Philips, Sanyo, Samsung, Sony, etc. There were definitely some QC issues on Vizio's end for a while, I'm very certain.

Where I live they are very popular. Ive seen carts lined up at my local Wal-Mart with Vizio TV's in them. I would naturally expect the stores defective return's to consist mostly of what they sold.

Every manufacture has its QC issues. 4 Years ago I exchanged 2 Sony's in one day. Walked out with a Vizio and still have it. Works like the day it was new. A friend of mine has one of the first Vizio LCD's and it too works like it was new.

Ive heard in the past that Vizio uses the same components everyone else does but they run their company differently so they can pass on savings to the consumer. This I don't know but I can't say anything bad about products that have their name on it. You may not get a feature or two a more expensive set from the competition has on it but you are still getting a quality product the manufacture stands behind.

Vizio uses LG parts in their LCD tvs. Even the boards are LG designs, so you're basically getting an LG at a discount price.
