reasonable voltage on 1045T - Page 3

Something's not right there.

I've got the same motherboard, and it's perfectly OK to overclock on it; Biostar even encourages its use in such applications. But I'm using a 1035T with the FSB at 256 and still using the Turbo Core feature, and it's 100 percent Prime stable for 24 hours, at 1.28v, up to 1.39 under load. I've seen cores turbo up to speeds of near 4 GHz with no issues. Seeing as how a 1045T is presumably a little better quality CPU...

One thing I might suggest, and I know this is going to sound weird, is that I changed the memory configuration to a lower speed and the system became unstable. So I switched it back to default (DDR-1333), and just ran the memory overclocked, with a slight vdimm boost for stability (although I'm not sure this RAM even needs it). My 1333 RAM runs at 1707 MHz with no problems.

There is no way you should be having to disable two cores and jolt 1.58v into any Thuban to get it to run 800 MHz over stock. In fact, you should never run a Thuban on more than about 1.45v at all.

If your RAM is up to running overclocked, try changing that setting back to default and see if that helps you.

I have cheap Microcenter 1333 RAM, 2x4G. Set at 1066 it would have been clocked at 1386 with a FSB of 260. The same RAM handled 1466 when the FSB was set at 220 with no problem. I can set it to DDR-800 in BIOS to rule it out, that would be 1040.

It does not seem like cheap RAM is the issue, but I see this brought up in numerous threads. How would a RAM issue be resolved by increasing the voltage applied to the CPU?

Thanks

Well, overclocking a locked multiplier processor with a low-binned DDR3-1333 kit is certainly going to leave you with fewer options because of the limitedflexibility.

Taking on 4Ghz with a 1045T requires a 300Mhz bus clock which might be difficult to configure because there is no DDR3-1333 multiplier.  A 300Mhz bus clock works best with a DDR3-1600 kit as a result of the x5.33 RAM multiplier; though giving the binning trends I have sometimes seen and can be expected from generic memory kits, you shouldn't expect to reach 1600Mhz operation on this kit.  Worth a try but doubtful.  I usually recommend DDR3-1600 kits or better when overclocking locked multiplier processors, particularly the x6 1045T and 1055T.  There's just less hassle that way and it often doesn't cost more.

I can't explain that. I just know that when I set my RAM to DDR-1066 in the BIOS to keep the RAM speeds down, my stable overclock with the RAM running overclocked went into the crapper, but returned to complete stability as soon as I changed it back to the proper DDR-1333 setting and just ran the RAM at 1707 MHz. Your guess is as good as mine for why that would happen.

My BIOS also supports DDR3-800, so a x4 RAM multiplier. So even at 300 multiplier I would be at 1200. Although the timings the BIOS defaults to might need attention 6-6-6-15-20?

But I am not trying to get anywhere near 300 at this point. If it takes 1.58v to hit 260, I can't handle the heat with my current set up.

Edit - with the RAM set to DDR-800 the system would boot FSB 260 with Vcore = 1.536, increases to NB and CPU-NB were also required.

This is becoming quite the distraction.

I can NOT boot FSB 240 but I can boot 245 at stock volts (1.392). And of course I have to add volts again at 250.

FSB 245, 5.33 memory multi, CPB off, HT 1800. Everything else default.

I am about 15 min into a Prime run, with CPU max temp at 62C.

Edit - system hung after about 30 minutes in Prime.

I understand what you're saying about the memory multipliers; I have the same motherboard. What I was saying is that mine didn't want to operate stable unless I chose the proper setting for the RAM I had installed. I couldn't use the 4x (DDR-800) or 5.33 (DDR-1066) settings and run stable, but when I returned to DDR-1333 and just let the RAM run overclocked, I was able to overclock a 1035T beyond the rated speed of an 1100T AND still use all of the CPU's features like Turbo and CNQ with no problems. I just don't think that feature is very well implemented.

There's no way you should be hitting 62C in Prime after just 15 minutes at 3308 MHz at 1.392v, either. But that cooler you're using really isn't meant for use on Thubans, let alone an overclocked Thuban. It's a "low-profile" cooler that was designed for use in HTPC applications, and doesn't have a whole lot of fins for heat dissipation. That could also be some of your problem. The stock AMD cooler would do a better job than that Scythe. A $25 Hyper 212 Plus/EVO would probably cut 15C off those temps. I never got close to 62C after 24 hours of Prime--on the same board with a Thuban clocked at 3328.

Thanks for everyone's responses. I will probably order some of that Samsung memory I keep reading about and see if it helps. Although it looks like a new case and cooler might be needed as well.
