A classic case of why not everyone's opinion should be treated equally. Some people's opinion are just flat-out wrong.

Whether or not you would have purchased the content in question, that fact that you did not purchase it but instead chose to download it through an illegal channel means that you have broken the law. At best you are in possession of stolen property, at worst you committed outright theft. Your personal opinions on what is fair or just, or any other rationalization you choose to use, do not excuse you from the law.

Just to be clear, I don't like any of this either. But it is the law, and this site takes a dim view of any type of piracy.

Why would he plead guilty? It's like The piratebay...they can't get you for copyright infringement if all you have is meta data *****.

Probably out of fear. He probably can't afford the cost of a trial against such a powerful and cash-flush claimant. And he also probably knows that he's on shaky ground and would be likely to lose, given the way the US courts have persistently ruled in favor of the RIAA on these matters. Better to take the plea bargain and receive a lighter punishment than to try and make some "moral stand" that might win him praise from certain web board posters and bloggers, but also earn him a much stiffer penalty in the end.

I torrent what I think is unreasonable. I love PC games, but at $50+ tax each, that's $57.50 to $70 for a game each (15% sales tax in Quebec). It's kind of ridiculous, even considering minimum wage is $7.60.

Hence, I just buy the games after I play them alot OR if I really, really want it.

Edit: Then again it's not illegal in Canada Another reason why we own
im in the same boat as you. i mean here is aus its $100+ for a new release game. i mean yeah i love owning original games and all, but for $100
im not going to waste my money on a single player game. most of the time for multi i dont have much of a choise

not to mention the months of waiting for games to come out it aus way after the rest of the globe has them

And as for music? well i pride myself on my music collection.. and if i bought every album i have then i might as well be a million dollar man.

im all for torrents

If the entertainment industry churned out products that were actually worth money once in a while, this wouldn't be happening.

There used to be a day when the Justice "system" had to punish those who were the perpetrators of the crime. That "system" ( I REALLY use that word loosely) was designed to make it difficult to prosecute so the weight of truth was not on the defendant.

Punishing the guy who invented BitTorrent is a REALLY cheap puncture right through all those protection methods. The music industry lobbied and passed RIGHT OVER Justice to slap someone with a technology that had the possibility of being abused. Who are they going after next? The ISP's? Computer manufacturers for storing that content? Home Owners for having WiFi that a neighbor hijacked to steal music? Where does it stop since it has most definitely begun?

This is a crime of a magnitude I have never seen and it scares me.
