Steam is an economy.
TF2's items are an economy.
DoTA 2 will have an economy.

Steam, itself, is an economy, both on a monetary and community sense. People have made it a virtual economy. It's even got its own form of politics (see steam user forums.)

Valve has created a microeconomy in the form of Steam.

Very good read, btw.

But you can only buy from Steam, you can't sell...doesn't an economy require both? The same with hats? I thought an economy was the idea that people set prices and those prices fluctuate depending on demand, right?

Yanis Varoufakis is a genius, no doubt about it. He is a Heterodox economist. Anyone interested in Economic theory and history should check him out. His book Global Minotaur is excellent, as well as the textbook that followed it, "Modern Political Economics: Making Sense of the post 2008 world."

His "Foundations of Economics" is great as well, if a little outdated. His papers on Game theory, and his text book on it are amazing as well.

It's interesting how Valve found him, he is a very popular Economist in Europe, and his PhD program at the University of Athens was a great program, sadly Greece fell apart, and the funding dried up. Now he is teaching at UT I believe.

He is one of the few Economists I've read who is amazingly readable. His other blog, is www.yanisvaroufakis.eu check it out if you are looking for a different world view, from a man who knows what he talks about.

Very interesting.

You don't say... maybe that's why the wink.gif was there. You couldn't have actually thought I was being serious.

My reaction:

"BAAAHAHAhahaha a Greek economist you say? What a great inv-

*looks at portrait*
*gulp*

"...Er, truly, deeply sorry Mr. Varoufakis. . . So, how 'bout that Phillips Curve, eh? Eh?"

In all seriousness, though, that guy is freakin awesome. Considering Valve is freakin awesome as well, prepare yourselves for imminent collapse of the earth around the awesomeness singularity that is about to form.

I'm really excited about Dota's is doing with their f2p model. Unfortunately I prefer LoL to Dota 2, but being able to customize the weapons on your hero seems so awesome. (and ultimatly expensive ofc biggrin.gif)
