tl;dr, Valve observed problems with their cross-game economies that resembled real-world economic problems. So they brought in an economic consultant to study it and provide solutions. Economist discovered more about economies through studying the game economies than he ever could studying the world economies (because everything is documented and tracked and you can correlate it much more simply).

Implications could be pretty significant for beyond the in-game economies (perhaps it could help the world economies?).

Boring but fascinating at the same time. smile.gif
The goal of transparency will never be achieved because the fat cats in charge won't allow it, and that's what would be required for the happy thoughts expressed in this article to come to fruition.

Urgh, so long as Valve don't start offering an excahnge for real monies (if they already do this, kill me now) then it's ok.

How do you think people buy hats?

(and wedding rings, and other things, there have been a few very expensive (+$10K IIRC) that have sold, too. tongue.gif.

Other than that though, I'm not really on the up and up of many F2P happenings, tend to avoid those type of games like the plague.

So common sense was applied... Hype machine at work. I'm also one who found this rather boring. He noticed someone in economics may be able to solve an economic problem. Seriously? Interesting maybe, because its applying RL to games, though not far fetched in the least. But not this amazing thing to be praised over... Not by a long shot. Oh well, I'm just not one of those Steam guys....

Same. Free2Play are the plague. The only reason developers and publishers are all like "ya this is the new thing" is because it makes a fair bit of money for them off the richer people who can afford to waste money on hats and stuff for their characters. Or like BF F2P where you buy a gun pack for... a week, for about £5.

For me. I pay once and then that's it. Any in game microtransactions receive an instant "not buy" from me. DLC I can just about stomach, but this stuff has got to go. The only Free2Play I can agree with is one minus real money that's supported by ads.

I agree there was a certain amount of hype surrounding this (as almost anything valve-related is heralded as saint-like), but on the other hand, it presented a situation that was real-world-economy-like but provided all the correlation-info that an economist would need in order to properly understand the system as a whole (as opposed to the real-world, where not everything is tracked or known precisely).

It's an interesting idea, but agreed, hyped a bit.
