[xbit labs] MSI lightning 7970OC vs GTX 680 DC2 TOP OC head to head - Page 6

Exactly. There is nothing wrong with passionate debate between fans of a particular brand. That's really what a forum is for after all. It's also not silly at all to like one product over another for reasons other than purely performance. Look at Chevy vs. Ford. Or Coke vs. Pepsi. I could go on and on. It is perfectly natural to be a fan of a particular brand that you enjoy and defend said brand when "under attack" by the opposing brand. Where did this notion come from that you can't be a fan of something unless its the best? If that was the case I would have had to give up on the Falcons 25 years ago...

I really find it funny when people are just biased with certain comments like, " NVIDIA get owned!" or "Green is better than Red!"
First off, its us the consumers that are getting owned... why?
The 680 is a mid range card and we're paying high end for it. So to even say Nvidia got owned is laughable because they're pushing a mid range card while the 7970 is the high end card from AMD. In the end it is the consumer getting owned..not NVIDIA or AMD
At the same time AMD knee caps its initial 7970 owners by releasing a beta version and now with its GHZ edition is showing what it can do. So we get owned and not AMD or NVIDIA.
In the end just pick a card that you can afford and whatever suits your need and stop getting into flame wars. Lol! thumb.gif
Just my 2cents.gif
This argument is entirely ridiculous. Why is the 680 called mid range? Mid range implies there's something above it-- there isn't. The fabled GK100 never came to market, and may have never even seen the light of day. The decision to make GK104 the flagship Geforce card was made long before Nvidia knew of Tahiti.
As for AMD releasing the Ghz edition, I don't see how they're ripping off their customers. The 28nm process is simply maturing, and they're able to make higher clocked cards now than they were in December of 2011. Intel and AMD release new steppings of CPUs all the time, but no one seems to make an argument against it. Because pushing more mature fab processes just makes sense.

Pretty silly they used 1165 MHz "overclock" for the 7970. My grandma could get a better overclock then that with a vanilla 7970.

I understand you're argument but you also have to look at the mid range for NVIDIA. It has and always will be (until they change the numbering sequence) that where GK104 sits (just like in the last generation or two - 400 and 500) it is mid range. Kind of like a Mercedes C class and an E class, even though the C63 AMG performs like the E63 AMG, the C is never really the higher end versus the E. From a model line up perspective the GK104 is and always will be mid range.

People will always argue which I try to stay away from. I do want to end it by saying that I respect your opinion and will still choose the best bang for the buck for my needs regardless of the green team and red team crazies out there! Lol! biggrin.gif

I believe the thing that you're not taking into consideration (and what everyone else is trying to say), is there is no E63 AMG this gen. The C63 AMG really is the best there will be for this set.

They gave it the *80 name. It is their best single-GPU card this gen, regardless of the chip it was made on, and that is the entirety of it.

You do realize Nvidia saying "GK104 is our midrange GPU" would kill the GTX 680 sales?

You're on a forum, people come to forums to discuss. If you don't want to discuss, then you shouldn't be here.
