Internet Spittler

Thread Starter
I currently have only one CAT5e cable that goes from my router to one of my computers. If I use an internet splitter to spit the wire, and one end goes to my main gaming computer and the other goes to my secondary computer, will my internet be slower? I currently get about 15-20 download. Would this mean I am only going to get about 7-10 download when both are on the internet?

Also, if my house is wired with CAT5e, it would be redundant to use a CAT6 from my router to my computer, correct?

The only way your internet would be slower is if both computers would be using it at the time time. Even then you wouldn't notice it unless one computer is either downloading or uploading something. Or watching youtube videos in HD.

Internet spliters are not the same as TV spliters where a loss of quality happens when you have multiple cable lines coming from one splitter.

I believe your bandwidth will be divided between the two computers, so if you're down/uploading files simultaneously on both PCs, yes it will be slower.

Cat5e and cat6 are practically the same. Cat5e can achieve gigabit performance, cat6 is certified to achieve gigabit performance. Only issue is that every item in the "chain" must be gigabit capable (router, switch, NIC card). Also AFAIK ethernet splitters only work with certain routers, or switches. A better bet would be picking up a cheap gigabit ethernet switch.
