What about 3rd party lenses?

For example what is the difference between these 2?

for the price the both will offer decent image quality.

i have used the sigma 70-300 on a friends camera before and it is a pretty slow focusing lens and would not be that wonderful for sports but honestly quality wise the 55-200 probably doesnt not beat it by much.

i can tell you from experience the cheaper sigmas and super zooms such as these suffer from lens flaws more obviously than higher quality more expensive lenses. so in the sigma you can probably expect to see a decent amount of color fringing where as the nikon it might be less noticeable but still there under some inspection. also unless you stop the aperture down to a higher fstop number the images are not going to be super fantastic sharp. these lenses are cheap beginners lenses and so as long as you are ok with the quality that comes from this glass then either one will do the job just dont hold them up with high expectations as sports photography demands a little higher quality equipment to get really solid images. sports photography is possible one of a very few types of photography where the equipment is important to get a good shot but in any other form of photography i would say the photographer makes the image not the gear, for sports the gear is kinda crucial wink.gif

What about taking still Photos? Would 300mm be better? We i would not consider myself anywhere close to taking Photography seriously. I just do it for fun right now.

if your subject is standing still 300mm is overkill unless you are taking pictures of animals or something.

honestly like i said above the image quality of both will be roughly even which is sub par at best in my opinion.

either one is fine and the difference of 410 will show no noticeable increase in quality or honestly no significant increase in zoomable distance. the difference between 200mm and 400mm or 200mm and 500mm is a lot more significant and noticeable to my eye than 200 to 300.

just to clarify as you have not yet mentioned the word video you do realize you are posting in the video camera section right.

i have been giving advice assuming you are taking still pictures as that is what you have been talking about and have ignored that you are in the video section btw wink.gif

Yeah i think i posted in the wrong section. Yes i am taking stills. So 200mm is fine for ~ 100-120 meter distance?

yea it will be ok. i dont know what you are looking for as far as how much your are going to fill the frame. you cant get a super tight shot shooting the long way down a soccer field with anything less than 400mm
