[BareFeats] 3D EXTREME: 'Retina' MacBook Pro versus two other MacBook Pros

This is an exercise to see how well the best 'Retina' MacBook Pro handles extreme 3D gaming compared to the best 'late 2011' MacBook Pro. And we added results for the low end 'mid 2012' MacBook Pro with the same GPU as the 'Retina' MacBook Pro but with half as much video memory and a slower main processor.

For Portal 2, the settings were 4X MSAA, 8X Anisotropic Filtering, Vertical Sync Disabled, Multicore Rendering Enabled, Shader Detail Very High, Effect Detail High, Model/Texture Detail High.

Each of the laptops tested are powering Apple's 27 inch 1440p display which is about 3.7m pixels vs the 1800p display on the Retina MacBook Pro which is 5.2m pixels. Portal 2, WoW, etc., are probably playable with 30+ FPS on high at native resolution.

yeah but you should really ignore all the retina things the macbooks have, apple computers are not made for gaming they are made for office and hipster things along with the occasional gfx designer. they shouldnt be showing off with that quad core (which i doubt is really a quad core, the new ipad only had quad core gfx not a quad core and was still said to be 4 times better then the tegra 3 which is a quad core with better gfx) its just going to over heat in their unibody (which is a really stupid design, you need airflow in a laptop not something that forms to the circut and doesnt allow heat to escape) and statistics show that in a laptop its better to have a dual core and a good gfx card, quad cores dont really give you that much of a push in a laptop. you should get a razer blade insted,a laptop with 2 screens and 10 little lcd buttons is better then an insane res.

EDIT:and another thing pcs tend to have more of is... WINDOWS

Hey Hemmi, thanks for the constructive comment. Clearly you read the review.

I like the new laptop very much as well, it'll make video editing at 1080p much easier with the expanded IPS, and you're right about the good price point for such a design. That included software sure is worth the premium, don't you agree? I was just as surprised as you that the extra vRAM made such a difference! Perhaps we'll both get one soon. Keep up the good work Hemmi.

Macbook Pro (15) are running Quad based Ivy Bridge. That is pretty much known. No one denying that.

Can you provide this statistical data? Does it include productivity, gaming, thermal and battery? I'd love to see it.

i7 Quads in laptops provide you a big push in performance for non gamers who can take advantage of more then 2 cores and 4 threads. The people who use there laptops heavily as a workstations. Not to mention they can provide around the same battery performance as a i5 dual core or i7 dual core laptop.

I'll be avoiding the Retina and just going for either the 2012 + Hi Rez Upgrade or 2011 Hi Res 15" used or refurbished depending on money.

I don't like the prospect of being locked down completely with the internals for upgrades at the 2200+ price tag.

Anyone who buys a Macbook pro for gaming is a complete and utter moron. alienware M17X is roughly 1799$ at MSRP. The top end Macbook pro uses the slow 650m (fermi die shrink) and costs 2800$. The M17X has a 17" screen and has the 7970m (faster) or 675m.

Of course, most apple fans are complete morons and pay more money for less hardware. It has a nice display but thats where it stops.

Yes, because people should't have a preference for OS X or Windows, or the keyboard/trackpad design, or overall ease of use. Everyone knows that only the tech specs matter. rolleyes.gif

His last statement pretty much rings true with most everyone rehashes in Apple threads here, when discussing gaming or otherwise.
